3d Studio Max by Discreet is a very powerful program.  Its rendering capabilities are very good and what I have learned about the interface so far has been fairly easy to use.

There are many plugins to choose from and just like with any graphics programs some plugins are free and some aren't.
 

I have primarily used 3ds max for simple modeling techniques and honestly I have seen what the program is really capable of.  Some credits where 3d max work can be seen is in the motion pictures Spawn, Event Horizon, The Truman Show and Pleasantville, and the TV series Space: Above and Beyond, Star Trek Voyager and Deep Space 9.

3Ds max does not save in *.BIN format.  No demo is available.  3D Studio Max ranges between one thousand to fifteen hundred dollars (for students) depending on the plug-ins and power packs you want included with the program.
