Gold Mode Screen Shots

I set out to test Gromit's info about the gold mode screen shots. Here is what he said:

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Gromit@TRI:
<B>It is a true color 24-bit .RAW file (so no external palette). The size in bytes is 640x480x3. I dunno about PSP but here is what you enter in PShop to open it:

Dimensions
Width: 640 pixels
Height: 480 pixels

Channels
Count: 3
Interleaved (Yes)
Depth: 8 Bits

Header
Size: 0 bytes</B><HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Right off the bat, I have to say that this information, as it turns out, wasn't even needed - given the resources currently available. My first attempt to open "vel0001.raw" was a complete success when I used the RawAct.8bi plug-in for photoshop. End of all complications and give yourself a slap in the forehead. Thank you Gromit and Terminal Reality.

Note. Opening the file manually, using Gromit's info, worked perfectly too.

Next up was to try and open the same file in PSP. I clicked open, selected the "raw" file type, then set the dialog box as follows.

Voila, this is what we get.

Software mode. Gold Mode works great; it even gives a better image than I was seeing on the screen. Btw, print screen would not work on my computer.

Direct 3D (Gold Mode). Again, Gold Mode did the job. However, I could use print screen to get the same effect.

Direct 3D (print screen). Note, however, that using gold mode you can take as many pictures as you want whereas print screen allows only one pic at a time.

<center><IMG SRC="http://mtm2.com/~forum/pics/goldmode_prntscrn_d3d.jpg" border=0></center>

3Dfx (Gold Mode). And here's the clincher. Gold mode took a great pic while in 3dfx. <big>No hypersnap required</big>.

<center><IMG SRC="http://mtm2.com/~forum/pics/goldmode_vel0001_3dfx.jpg" border=0></center>

The only other note I found was that Gold Mode numbers screen shots consecutively starting at 0001 for every session - over-writing the old pics. Therefore, if you get a screen shot that you like, you must copy it to another folder or have it over-written next time you take pictures.

Conclusion. Gold Mode takes very good screen shots in all rendering modes. No extra programs required.

I've never been one to use cheats & I thought that the Gold thing was nothing but that so I never even tried it. Now I see some great pics from some new angles. So how do I use it? Is the camara moveable?

Actually, the camera angles are one of its best features. Winterkill explored the gold mode very thoroughly and posted his findings here. http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Corridor/9018/gold.htm

good, useful info Phin... I have a question though. CorelPaint seems to only recognise it's own "native" variation of .raw files. Do you know of a plug-in or filter that's available to get around this?

In a way : sort of.

The 8bi photoshop plug-ins usually work in PSP too. But not for this one =(

The trick would be to use PSP and open the file the way I've shown above, copy it to the clipboard, then paste it in PhotoPaint. I know it's a cheesy sort of work-around (an extra paint program and all) but at least it will let you work in your fav.

Btw, have you tried to open one of these yet?

Yes, hence the above question.(concerning .raw files directly from MTM) These are jpgs on this page huh?
I was aware of the (2 paint program) workaround... was trying to learn a little more about Corel's "version" of .raw.... maybe I'll drop 'em a line before they go out of business Image

Can anyone get that RawAct thing to work in photoshop 4? i've got 4 and the plug in and followed all instructions and it still doesn't work. (why?)

Would that plugin work with PSP 6:02???? i've got the l8test version of PSP and i dont see how it would be installed because it is alot dif to Photoshop 4 thats 4 sure and the directories needed r not there

I have ver.8 and it's simply a matter of Open (image) then scrolling down the list of file types... but I had no luck with MTM .raw files up to now. I suspect the "Corel Raster Image" is a completely different file type but just happens to have the same extension.

Try Paint Shop Pro
http://www.jasc.com/

Free (expiring) demo available.

Or go to KC's and get the non-expiring version.

Indeed, well done. Kiss your Hypersnap goodbye eh? That's been the real 'hope' all along, for folks who can't take screenshots otherwise.

By the way, as it turns out, the original shots I took on my old video card were all bad, couldn't be opened in PS or PSP, even after Gromit shared info on the file type. So... my old video card wrote corrupt shots to disk, but my new one does not - and they open successfully. Don't it figure I'd be the one with screwy screenshots to begin with!

Edit:

Recap: Both Monster Truck Madness 1&2 will write multiple screenshots to disk in ANY video mode during standard game play when <i>GOLD</i> mode is active. The screen captures are written to disk in RAW and PCX form.

XnView is an excellent free utility you can use to view and convert the RAW screenshots:
