Cant get XP and tracked2 to Work, anyone have any ideas, and while im on the note, why not make a XP tracked2

As part of moving toward the future and all that jazz, Microsoft have started phasing out some of their older stuff to make way for the new (ask me, they no longer properly support Win95 ).

I believe starting with WinMe they've been working to cut out MS-DOS - probably a good idea, since building a 32-bit operating system on such antiquated underpinnings has always been a pursuit of questionable logic. Anyway the short answer is, WinXP is totally rewritten from the ground up - not an ounce of DOS in it. TrackEd2 runs if not totally under DOS then in a DOS-box under Windows. No DOS means those programs you used to run under DOS have a big question mark hanging over them as to whether you'll get them to run on WinXP (though I'm told backwards compatibility with programs from previous versions of Windows is good).

Any ideas, hmmm. Unless you can trick TrackEd2 into running under Windows, which you probably can't since it needs the DOS environment, you may have to go as far as installing an old copy of DOS (if you can find one) on your machine and running it as an operating system in its own right, or under WinXP if it will let you, or go for something like a DOS emulator or something. Brr, I'm scared already. As for a new version of TrackEd2, TRI wrote the original TrackEd2 and I doubt they'd be up for it.

I think we have Windows-based utilities now that can do most of the stuff TrackEd2 did, maybe you could try some of those. Like Tikis Truckshop, f'instance.

My friend recently purchased XP pro, I tried TrackEd2 on it and it worked great, as for why it did or what you can do to get yours to work I cannot say (I dunno). Listen to D2S ;-)

Hang on to your older Windows CD's...you can get software that lets you have multiple operating systems....so if you want to use older programs, then you just select "windows95/98/me" or whatever at boot-up, or "windowsXP if you are going to use the computer for other purposes.

Was just thinkin', did this friend install XP as an upgrade on a previous Windows installation? If so, there's probably still some of the old 16-bit architecture of the previous OS floating around in there - although XP doesn't use it, it might explain why Tracked2 ran happily with it. If not, well I'd just have to put it down to what I put every other inexplicable Windowsism down to - "Windows works strange".

What more need be said, the OS is an enigma.

Ahh, good thinking! Quite uncharacteristically (to use a twenty-letter word) he did install it on top of Win98, for a first try, later, I'm sure, he'll re-install afresh, dual boot and all of that, if I'm able I'll test it again at that time and come back here with an update.

It seems that if you have the space a multi-boot system is a good thing (like BigDOGGe said), though XP weighs in at about 1.5 gigs.

iv had the same problem..i d/l it just about 15 mins ago and when i tryied to run it (tracked2) it says: ERROR : cIni::GetProfileString: Unable to open input

anyone know what to do?

I too have Windows XP, and Tracked2 worked fine on this comp until today, I don't know, it just stopped launching. Windows XP shouldn't really have a problem with Tracked2, unless you delete the trk folder and the models/art folders like I did, then well like myself, this program may cause a bit of worry when trying to lauch the Tracked2.

i have multiple OS. reason being b/cmy wife likes 98, and i like XP. works pretty good. all you need is patition magic prog. super easy.

My Tracked2 quit working also . It seems after a fresh install of XP (E Machine ..came with XP) Tracked2 would run . After some time , it would quit . Then I wasn't able to run any dos programs . A google search turned up 3 files that become corrupted . They are autoexec.nt , config.nt , and command.com . They can be found in the "system32" folder . I found a small program that replaces these files with fresh ones . I used this and Tracked2 fired right up . This problem gives an error that says something like "Can't run 16 bit programs" when trying to run a dos program . Here is a link to the fix .
