WK....
The origin of the word Pommie (Prisoner Of Mother England) is explained rather well here: Pom although I seem to remember my history teacher (a long time, long ago!) offering another exlanation in that Pom was derived from pomeganate. This was part of the standard diet (among other fruits) for British sailors on long voyages, to stave off the occurence of scurvy. This is why Americans refer to us as Limeys.. as in limes.
Another intriguing slanguage is Cockney Rhyming Slang. Have a look at this link: Cockney
The author of the site does fail to mention tho' that these elaborate rhymes get abreviated... as in "Take a butchers at the Bristols on her!" (I'll let you work that one out) :)
"Bob's your Uncle" simply means... "this it how it is done" as in "just reinstall Windows for the third time and Bob's yer uncle".. Heehee (as if THAT would solve a problem)... Oh and *beep*'s your aunt.
Being an Englishman and being called a "Pommie *bleep*" by our Australian cousins is generally accepted as a form of endearment so it's not really derogetory. They are just pining for the homeland in they're own special way..... are you familiar with Barry Humphries aka Dame Edna Everage??
American slang.... here's a whole new can of worms waiting to be opened huh? I've met a lot of "Yanks" from different parts of this huge country and they all have their own unique colloquialisms and accents (don't mean to offend you rebel boys down there in the south Psyc!) My first introduction to the "native settler" was some big, cigar smoking, cab driver in Noo Yoik, who... to strike up a conversation on my $60 ride asked: "are the kids as F****D up in Inglan as they are over here?"... I was lost for words, but it was a priceless moment I'll remember forever!
Meanwhile I'm having to get used to my American stepkids asking "Wassup", "Dude, hey hey dude c'mon DUDE" when they want to make a point (?). And at the same time watching grown men getting worked up over 15 seconds of action (between commercials and 20 replays) in a so-called football game! I gotta hand this one to the Ozzies... Ozzy Rules football kicks ass.... and balls :)
As a little aside... Paul Hogan, who played Crocodile Dundee, had a very popular weekly show which was shown on Brit TV for a few years.... and his trademark was taking the *beep* out of stereotypes, maybe that says something. Anyway blokes it's about time to syphon the python, maybe have one more pigs ear, and stride up the apples and pears to keep the trouble and strife happy.. so G'nite fer now :)

>>Edit 2: "Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed; A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's *beep*." --Well what d'ya know, I was referred to as a Socrates just a few weeks ago. <<

Socratised? :D

Haccy or Rygon mentioned a "chat room" slang expression - l8ter I think.
My feelings are that there's gonna be a whole new generation of folks who will talk like this world-wide eventually!
I was racking my brains to think up the longest sentence one could say without actually speaking anything other than err, "chatguage"?.... I came up with this
"2day I h+ 2na sal+ 4 T"
(treat the "+" as "add")
Hmmmm some folks may not get the "T" thing, in Britain tea is an afternoon meal. (more of a snack).
And of course a beverage... made with milk, tea leaves and boiling hot water (sugar is optional).
Ambiguity :)
I've been using the expression M8 (mate) when chatting in the UK room in Virtual Places for a couple of weeks.. and now everyone does it! BTW a fair dinkum proportion of visitors to that room are Aussies.

On a related subject... my femme has recently started a job at a farm, and one of her tasks is to interpret to the (mostly) Mexican workforce when the manager gives her morning instructions. Yesterday there was a directive about the company's No Smoking policy - and she was stuck for the Spanish/Mexican equivalent of "policy"....
She ended up telling the assembled workforce that the Smoking Police were cracking down. About 50 sniggerring Mexicans probably thought that made more sense! :)

Lingo huh? Yikes!

Dinner. Tea is dinner. We do have afternoon tea, though.

If the Smoking Police were cracking down, I'll bet they were sniggerring too.

I am the poor, beleagered translator for the farm w/all the non/english Mexican folks. I am Dorothy, mc's "femme". I got one better than the smoking police--yesterday, I was asked to tell folks to please return the missing "hoses". Well, I couldn't think right then (they spring these things on me INSTANTLY) of the word for "hoses", so I used the word for "sprinklers." UNFORTUNATELY, "sprinkler" translates as IRRIGATATION, and that's the name of one of our WORK CREWS, so you can imagine the wierd looks and sniggers as I said "if ANYONE's taken our "IRRIGATION CREWS", please return them. OOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSS.

Dorothy

OMG... an unlicenced halibut! We are amongst criminals!
Had a totally bizzare conversation (on voice chat) with an English guy today who was advocating the fact that he has invented the new sport of "chair wrestling". He was totally convincing - insisting that it should be the next major Olympic event. He even went on to describe during the development of this sport, at a promotional event, he was duped into a bout against a beanie bag and had to dispatch his opponent by biting through the fabric and spilling his polystyrene filling all over the place. And I thought I was a little nuts!

Remind me not to shop at Ralph's.
