Is there a utility that can convert a mtm saved replay file to some other avi file type?

No.

The replay file is actually a plain text "script" that can only be interpreted by the mtm2 game engine. In fact if you look at one in a text editor you will see it looks a lot like the contents of a SIT and TRK file. Seems to me they could be edited by hand, for fun, never tried to though.

Ok, thax Winterkill....I was just thinking it would be kind of neat to have a Replay Contest of some sorts....I not sure if it has been done before, but thinking it would be fun to watch short clips of the best Endo or crash & burn or something....anyways,
Just thinking out loud....

Interesting idea Chach.... maybe there's a potential competition here. I have a killer replay that cracks me up... a truck "corkscrewing " in C98, landing and carrying on without losing momentum. The rules would have to state "stock tracks only" so everyone can view huh?
Take a look at Bearfoot here screwyC98.rpl

So what did you think of it Phin? I've seen some good replays (frome Zoon and Obe) but I thought THAT one was good!

I once thought about having a replay contest.

I was going to have one involving the most spectacular crash. I even came up with a name - "The Great Flipoff." Get it? Flipoff...Flip Off...never mind!

I you decide to have your contest, you could use that name, I'd certainly be honoured.

Hey MC...that replay sounds like a riot!!! I'll havta check it out when i get home from work today...and ya,probly would have to limit it to just stock tracks...the other idea i was thinking of is if the replay could be converted then edit out everything except for a short clip of the sceen that a person wanted to show rather than the enire lap....but it doesnt look like that might work. I just stopped by at hyperionics webpage(hypersnap) and noticed they had a shareware version of "hypercam",a full motion screen capture program that save as an avi filetype.Might be able to edit a short sceen with that, but I am not sure if it captures fullscreen glide or opengl,I'll have to look into it...(ps. I once had a replay of bigfoot doing an endo about 4 or 5 times then landing on its tires and kept goin,it was hilarious..wish i would have kept it.)

Okay I think this link works now.... it's taken me all day to get it right. It's a .zip file so extract it to yer Saved Replay directory. When you click on the link left click (on the file name on the Tripod page) to download it.

Having seen a .rpl file as text - I would think it would be a big challenge to edit. It would be interesting to know how TRI assembled the promo movie for 4x4... er, can't find the link to that right now but I'm sure somebody will put it up.

Hiya MC.i checked out that Hypercam program from Hyperionics...and it does capture mtm2 full sceen(software/D3D render) video.i recorded a short clip of your replay.it turned out pretty good.I'm guessing thats how TRI did it. When i get home from work I will upload those examples to my website so people can have a look at them. (:

Sure thing Hacman, go ahead and host it...I was just looking for alternative ways of watching a replay...so that for instants, people who dont have the mtm game on their pc could view them and possible get more people interested in the game or something along those lines... Also another idea would be that the replays could be converted in to some sort of streaming video from a website, or possibly you could make a short movie of the top 5 replays that won in a contest or something...Anyways, that enough mumbling from me. hopefully I can get those avi replays uploaded to my site so you can have a look at them....
(ps,what were you thinking of when you sead "A BUNCH OF GOOD REPLAYS"? Just racing or crashes or something?)

I'm working on some 'basic' utilities for MTM2 at the moment - my best one is podzip32 but i am niot good enough at c++ yet 2 make a replay converter - perhaps some time in the near future when i know c++ better i will make a utility like that. For the HMTM2000 contest i am going to make screensavers not movies - same sorta thing. I got all that screen capturing stuff so i will probably convert the replays to Screensavers using screen capturing software.

btw:what i meant by A BUNCH OF GOOD REPLAYS was what u said + 2 c how good people r at racing tracks. I wont be converting the whole lot over to screensavers just the good crashes and other cool stuff in the replays

Well...finally here it is, the link for the short clip scene from the replays i captured. When I recorded them them it was fullscreen uncompressed software & Direct3D rendering, the program I used did not support Glide or OpenGl. I edited two short replays together to make 1 short movie and I applied a 20% compression ratio to shrink the file size to 11mb, it is zipped to approx 6.5mb. now keep in mind that the movie will seem a little choppy, it is because my PC is a little weak in the horsepower department.(Pentium 233mhz MMX w/ 64mb ram),needless to say it had all it could do to run the mtm game and the capturing at the same time, I imaginge that people with pc's with more proccessing power will have better results.
Here is the link. MOVIE
When the tripod page opens, clink on the link in the orange box. Well I hope you like it and who knows..maybe it will inspire some ideas in other people. Image
