are you behind a router, cause if you are, you should use your DMZ or play around with your ports

its an actiontec modem.

This is how I have my router set up and I can host and join

PORT RANGE FORWARDING
DirectX 2300 to 2400 Protocol TCP forward to my LAN IP address

UPnP FORWARDING
Chat Ext.Port 6667 Int. Port 6667 Protocol TCP forward to my LAN IP address
DirectX Ext.Port 6073 Int. Port 6073 Protocol TCP forward to my LAN IP address
DirectX Ext.Port 47624 Int. Port 47624 Protocol TCP forward to my LAN IP address

I would look into these two

# Configure Firewall (PDF)
# Configure Port Forwarding* (PDF)


And use this as an absolute last resort

# Configure DMZ Hosting* (PDF)



Also, it's come to my attention recently that programs you have running in the background can interfere with rengames launch so you might want to shut down anything that doesn't need to be running until you solve this, and then maybe add them back a little at a time to see if anything is contributing to the problem.

ok i went to the configure firewall, it came up with a page asking me what security level i want to set it on, its set on basic right now should i change it to low?

It wouldn't hurt to try it. If it's a problem you can always restore it later. But yes, firewalls are designed to keep things out and by their very nature they close ports. So, yep, I'd give it a whirl, especially if the ports are set correctly. The firewall could be conflicting with the port forwarding.

ok now the next page is dynamic routing, it gives 3 options, version 1, version 2, and then off. its off right now.

On page 3 it has the port forwarding options. Use the ports I mentioned above and enter them into that screen. The page doesn't show versions but I assume disabled isn't going to help us. Have a look at each of the versions and see what options it gives you. On my linksys, I set the 'ranges' on one page, and the other three specific ports on a different (but related) page. Could be your versions correspond to something like that - tho I'm only guessing. Either way, see if you can set the ranges first, then try the individual ports. If something goes wrong, you can always disable and start from the beginning again but I wouldn't think that'll be a problem.

thats the screen im on now. what should i put for the remote ip port range?

Make both port ranges match. That is to say, the remote port is what comes into the router and it forwards it to your computer... so you want them to be the same thing.

ok ive tried everything, to the best of my ability. and still nothing works. should i try the dmz hosting?

where it says host ip address or w/e do i just put in my ip?

Your LAN IP. Should have been the same thing as forwarding.

If it's still not working, that really narrows down the possibilities. Eg.

* you have a firewall installed and don't realize it
* you have software installed conflicting with the game
* your ISP blocks the ports (doubtful but possible)
* you are not using the correct IP address
* the router/modem is malfunctioning

if u dont mind losing firewalls.

you can type into a command line


netsh winsock reset

this will reset your IP and TCP stack. In other words, all the programs you installed with firewalls, virus scanners for internet, etc. while be deleted from the stack, it will function as if you just installed windows (virus scanners etc. will still work, but firewalls won't)
