 Post subject: Sound Problem playing MTM under Windows 98 SE

I installed my old Monster Truck Madness a few days ago.

Unfortunately I am experiencing some strange sound issues:
When I'm in a race, the sound seems to be a few seconds late, just like graphics and sounds are not synchronous.

Eg. when I'm pressing <space> or when I'm bumping into another truck it takes a while until a can hear the appropriate sound...
(Unlike MTM2 and many other games which work just fine...)

I downloaded and installed the MTM patch from MS, but to no avail.
I checked the config and I guess I tried out almost any possible graphic and sound setting combination...

My system is Windows 98 SE running on AMD Athlon XP 2400 with 1 Gig of RAM and a MSI GeForce 2 MX 64 MB RAM and a Soundblaster PCI soundcard.

Any ideas anyone? Any help would be appreciated!

r we talkign mtm1 or mtm2? cause mtm1 sound wont work on new systems while in direct 3D mode when u use an NVidia video card. There are a few games that will show this issue, Odium and Septerra core are two others I can think of off the top of my head. If you are talking about mtm2, check your volume settings, once i had my volume set to max in windows and then turned down in mtm2 and it made it sound like a broken record.

Also check DXDiag and check your sound option and do the tests.

Finally, make sure you have no other process that are, or can produce audio because they may interfere with it.

Hello Firefox. I understand your description and I know the effect. As a supplement to Slayer's notes my best advice is to try the following settings.

In the Advanced Sound Options you'll see the following:
-Buffer Settings-
Number of Buffers:3
Buffer Size:1024

The default number of buffers (3) paired with the lowest possible buffer size (1024) seems to produce the least amount of sound delay (none). The default buffer size produces a noticable delay on my system and I find that if I lower the number of buffers below three my sound becomes choppy. It seems that lower is better for this old game.

MTM 2 (and many other games) works fine :)

I just tried out your recommended buffer settings (Number of Buffers:3 and Buffer Size:1024). This really seems to be the combination that works best: no delay and not choppy...
Problem solved...

I'm happy I can play good old Monster Truck Madness again! :)
