Well everyone, I don't know what I did (if anything), but it started working lastnight. I went through your suggestions, and everything was set just as you guys said it should be. I didn't change anything, except the internet options in IE. Maybe when I went into Windows Explorer checking things it reset something, I don't know. Here's a pic as of 8:00am cst.



I don't know what fixed it, but I must have jiggled something when I was looking around following your directions.

ps. Oh btw, I'm using XP and IE6. I also use a zip program called IZArc instead of WinZip, because it's free & it opens more extensions than WinZip. I also have Mozilla Firefox. The dl prompt was fine in Firefox, just had troubles with IE.

Even if you want to still use IE get something like get right or net transport to handle your downloads for you.

i personally do not recommend a download manager unless it is actually sanctioned by microsoft or your just asking for trouble, trust me, ive gone thru a good 30 different download managers, and almost all of them caused more problems then they solved. the most common being that you can't download anymore. and its not fair to the people providing the servers to use those download managers to get around bandwidth caps.

A few notes.

If you have broadband you don't need a download manager. Even large files are handled easily without them.

If you have dialup, then download managers can help. Get right and gozilla are probably at the top of the list for user friendly and server conscience performance. I haven't used transport, so I don't know. Also, wint found a good freeware manager but I don't recall the name.

Regarding bandwidth caps, they are put in place for a very good reason. Misuse of a download manager can actually behave like a denial of service attack. When that happens, you shut down the server to other visitors. The purpose of download managers is to help people on a slow connection so they don't lose time if a download gets interupted. Interfering with a server's bandwidth not only doesn't help a slow connection but it destroys the benefit of having a server at all. If you have broadband, don't use them.

I use Mozilla Firefox (build 1.0.7) for 99% of my surfing & downloading, but I need IE for the Zone. I noticed my IE download problem when I was going to dl some tourney tracks with IE. Otherwise I would have just used Firefox.

I've never used a download manager...even when I was on dial-up. You're right Phin, now that I'm on broadband I wouldn't need a dl manager anyway.

Baloney, saying you shouldnt use a program unless Microsoft "sanctions" it is just downright silly. I bet the big M doesnt sanction Firefox or Opera but that isnt going to stop me from using them.

I am sorry if you have had troubles with DL managers in the past but I have used GetRight and NetTransport for many years with IE, and flashgot since I switched to FireFox as my main browser and none of them have caused me any problems.



That makes no sense, even if my DL manager doesnt work for some file it takes one click to disable it and let the browser DL it by itself.




I agree with this but dont blame the programs, blame the person that sets the configuration of the program, I have my DL managers set to never DL more than three files at once from any one server and I do not set them to DL one file using segmented DLs.




I agree up to a point, I usually dont use mine for any file under 10 megs unless its part of a bigger group of files I want to get from one server. ie large rar files that have been broken into smaller parts for download. I also use managers sometimes if the server I am connecting to is extremely slow no matter what the files size is.




Once again its all about how you set them up, if you dont allow them to DL many files at once and/or dont allow them to use segmented downloading then they behave no differently than if a user was clicking on the files himself using a browser.

I use the last freeware version of Net Transport (cheers Woody), and while these download managers can be dangerous to servers this one is politely configured by default (only two threads per download). I'm on dialup and it's immensely useful to me but even if I had broadband I'd still use it a lot. I originally got it to download audio streams but I use it to download almost everything, and love it because it's free and clean as freeware should be. I can download a half hour real audio stream in fifteen minutes and listen when I like rather than stream it only once for a choppy, full half hour. With zips and such it speeds up download time even using only one thread, it also ensures the whole file is downloaded properly and allows you to resume large downloads over multiple sessions, and it keeps a record of the url and stats, all of which can useful if you don't try out some downloads until months later.

Hey, it's great to hear that Opera is now free and ad free. I'd love to see that browser rule the internet.

I agree. But if everybody in this world acted responsibly we wouldn't have half the trouble we do.

I've been using it a while on the other comp. It's not bad. I don't know if it'll replace my fav, but it's definitely got potential. Good for them for making it ad free - that was a huge obstacle before.
