I was wondering if anyone could help me with my IE downloads? When I click on a link to dl a track (or any other file) it doesn't ask me where I'd like to dl the file to. It just starts dl'ing to the temp folder. It wasn't doing that till recently, wgich kind of caught me off guard. Any suggestions are appreciated.

well im not sure how to fix that, but u can get around it by:

right click the link to the download, and choose "save as" and that will open the window to choose where to download too.

Had a problem like that once.
A DEFRAGMENT worked. Maybe
delete your files and cashe.

I've defragged, cleaned temp files, etc. I've done everything except delete cookies which I don't like to do, because I lose the cookies for forums like this and other places. That way I don't have to log in everytime I come here.

I forgot about the right-click method, that worked. I just can't figure out why it stopped prompting me or how to get it to do so automatically again.

You can try restoring defaults in IE

click the tools menu-->internet options
Click the advanced tab, then click restore defaults

next click the programs tab, and click reset web settings

this should start your browser over from new, if that doesn't fix it, try reinstalling your browser.

also check file associations and try downloading other file types to see if the issue is consisten with all file types

Internet options > security tab > Internet > reset to medium > reset button
Internet options > advanced tab > restore defaults button

That should get you going.

The reason its happening is somewhere along the line you unchecked a checkbox on the download prompt. I've had it happen myself, thinking I was getting rid of a nag. Little did I know, lol.

I tried all of your suggestions Slayer, but still no luck. It prompts me for .exe files, but doesn't for .zip files. Where do you check to see which file extensions it prompts for?

Still no luck Phin. The solution is here somewhere, I just need to find the right place.

ok i actually took a look, and saw the option you probably removed the check from, although reseting the browser should work in theory, i think that info may be stored in the registry

try going here in regedit

there is some fun options here eg. in the downloads folder, in the list on the right that appears, change the value of checkExesignature from yes to no and it will stop *beep* about programs you download not having signatures lol

since i dont have the setting applied to always open zip files, i cant tell what the entry is, (and im not gonna uncheck that magic box so i dont end up with ur problem lmao)

its scary that windows uses your registry to store those URL's in the drop down list of your address bar


so anyways, look thru those areas, check the values, it will probably mention ZIP files in it and have meaningless code in it that you cannot understand, but that might be the one, u can always select that perticular key choose the file menu, and choose export to save that key, then delete it from ur registry, and if that doesnt work or makes things worse, just double click the .reg file that u exported and that key will be put back in.

That's a pretty evil place to put something like that lol

Somebody should be writing this stuff down. And while they're at it, somebody should figure out what changes in the registry when you click ok and possibly make a quick reg-fix for it.

I checked all of that Woody, it's exactly like you said. I'm not worried about "confirm open after download". I want it to prompt me to ask where I want to put the zip file before I download it.

This is the prompt with the checkbox. If I can figure out how to determine what changes when I uncheck that, then we could make a reg fix. I hope wint drops in. He might know.

This MSKB article describes the same problem but for exe files. But it's not every good because the example they give is for a word doc and looking in my own registry for zips it reads differently - and I unchecked the box to see if there'd be a change but there wasn't. Unchecking doesn't work for me.

This article claims a fix but it's for IE5. I can't try it because I can't reproduce the problem and I have IE6. The registry spot they talk about isn't even in my registry. If you try this, I'd say make a restore point, then proceed cautiously.

I have a download folder in there but it's empty. If you have a look, you can probably delete any references to zip files.

Thats the box I believe you want re enabled.

The label of the check box is deceiving, Yes, it says confirm open, but the confirm open box also has the save button where you choose a download location.

If I uncheck that box in the file types and click on a zip file IE will automatically download the file, if I recheck that box then the popup to confirm is reenabled.

Are you saying that the box is checked under file types and IE still automatically downloads a file without asking you whether you want to save or open?

Also from one of those links it appears that you might have to download winzip and install it before you can reenable the feature. I think this is more a file association in windows issue than a browser issue.

Yeah, that's the way I read it. And apparently there are some problems with windows that make whatever setting you have sticky. I can't uncheck that box even if I want to (I uncheck it but it keeps coming back), and it seems ol' Scatter can't get it checked.

Hi, phin, I edited my post since you replied.


Since XP handles zip files inherantly, it may be necessary to install a 3rd party program to regain control in windows over that feature.

This may already be , in which, more investigation of the problem is needed obviously.

Hi Street, I re-edited my post while you posted telling me you had re-edited your post, and I agree, reinstalling a zipper might help. I've only ever installed winrar and I wouldn't allow it to change file associations, so you never know.

Phineus has the right idea, I believe too that it has to do with this box and the tick not being there for you "always ask before opening this type of file"



Getting it back is another thing lol....

Try the following.
First make sure you are logged in as the Administrator on your computer, cause you need to modify the download preference for a file type.

This is an operating system-wide change that affects all the users who log on to the computer and who download the file type.

Follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

3. Click the File Types tab.

4. In the Registered file types list, click the file type for which you want to modify the download preference, (i notice when we download files from cownap.com for instance they are zip files if i remember rightly? so in that case go to the zip file type) and then click Advanced.

5. Click the Confirm open after download check box, and then click OK.

6. Click Close.


IF you happened to know when all this change happened to you, you could do a system restore instead which will fix it back for you.
