One of the domain registrars we use is currently offering a special deal that gives you domain names ending in INFO for free. The write ups say this is a no strings attached deal. I haven't registered one myself, but this has been an extremely reliable and very credible company for the past three years. I've seen nothing in that time that suggests we can't take them at their word. I suspect, what they plan is that you'll be so impressed with the service that you'll either be willing to renew the name when the time comes or register other names as well. "Free" is one of the best marketing strategies there is. So, if this sounds appealing or like something you'd be interested in, go give it a look.

PS. There's nothing wrong with an "info" extension. When I first registered karf.net NOBODY had "net" domains. It didn't take long tho for people to accept it as a normal thing. Another is legwon.biz. If it works, people will use it. So, "info" is nothing to be shy about.

Funny you bring this up.

If anybody notices cownap slow to respond, the domain guys said they're upgrading their equipment. So, it's no big deal and should be back to normal soon.

At the risk of beating this into the ground, I just registered a couple info names and the process was a snap. I did three names that all point at the otr site

http://vicandsade.info/
http://duffystavern.info/

Nothing simpler. And free.

They arent giving free hosting. Just free domain registration - and then u can change the IP that it points at or what?

Yes, it's full domain name management. That includes as much or as little as you want or need.

Example 1 - on the simplest level you can use it like a cjb.net redirection if that's all you wanted. ch_2005.info forwards to angelfire.com/ch_2005. But no pop ups or ads.

Example 2 - you can point it to an ip address and then configure your server to handle it properly. This is what I did.

Example 3 - same as example two but you can add sub domains.

Example 4 - as many email forwarders as you want.

Example 5 - you can configure your email server to work as a full blown mx server.

If you want to get technical, there's all that c name and a name stuff to dabble with. And there's a forum if you have questions - usually find what you need with a seach so you seldom need to ask.

I thought for guys like you or meth it's the perfect way to reserve a name and shorten your url. Can't go wrong for the price too.

Note. You need a credit card to verify you're real and not a bot. But no charges appear on the statement. I have a half dozen names with them now and they've never once messed up a billing issue. If anything, they like to work on the side of caution and not bill at all rather than over bill. At least, that's been my experience.

I don't want to come across as some sort of banner ad for these guys, but they really have been decent with me. And in this money grubbing internet world we've come to know, a free offer like this is just something I'd expect from them. It's their style of working.

Is it only domain hosting? Or do you get a control panel with it to design a website?

Please read the text again....It's NOT domain hosting, only domain names.......Phin just described it quite clearly.

You can register an address name there for free, then have it set to direct folks to your existing website.

If you want free website hosting, then check:

It's not a web site. It's the NAME part. The name is the part that makes networking and routing do it's thing.

For example, the address to this server is 207.36.86.166 so all you need to get here would be to enter that number in the location bar like this http://207.36.86.166/ But nobody likes to memorize all those numbers for all the sites you visit. So, we use names. When the net began, names were very precious and very expensive. But that's changing.

So anyway, first you make your site. Then, depending how it's hosted is what determines how you'd set up the name. And yes, there's a control panel so you can configure how you use it. But, it's the name we're talking about here. Not the web site part.
