This is just an FYI for anybody interested.

NS 7.0x has two bugs that I know of

- mail filters effect browser javascript (rare)
- terrible delays before a download begins (persistent and annoying)

Netscape v7.1 does not fix these problems.

Also, 7.1 seems to have broken an aspect of CSS that is also broken in IE6. Now they're both broken, lol. 7.0x had it right, but not anymore.

On the up side, NS 4x used to check mail when any part of the communicator suite was open. v7.0 stoped this, and it would only check mail when the mail program was open. Thankfully, that's been fixed and v7.1 is back on the job. Mail is checked even when just browsing.

Outside of that, there's a few cosmetic changes, a few things shuffled in preferences, and it feels more solid than v7.0.

One day I plan to check out mozilla.

Utility is the closest thing we have to this.

And I tried opera and object to the banners they forced me to look at. Even IE has too much clutter for my tastes.

Ya, Opera.

Or Mozilla since it's still developed unlike Netscape.

I thought netscape WAS mozilla.

Anyway, another thing I discovered. They restored 4.x's ability to bookmark things properly by drag and drop.

The same or different, they are closely tied.

Quote:
Netscape Navigator exists in two incarnations. First, there is the product developed and distributed by Netscape Communications Inc., which is available only in binary, but may now (unlike in earlier times) be freely redistributed. Second, there is Mozilla, which in a way is the "Open Source" version of Netscape Navigator. Netscape has made the source code available for everybody to hack on under a license similar to the GPL, but of course they do not assume responsibility for those versions.
- Running Linux

Anyway, I just installed mozilla, which has a much smaller download, but it seems to suffer from the same problems as netscape. Prolly not surprising. And btw, they share the same configuration files.

Related to this, whenever I get a 404 page, at least on cownap, I'm taken to an "internet optimizer" page as often as not. And it happens in IE too. Is anybody else getting this, or is it something I've picked up on my own? Reason I ask is either our site his being intercepted or my browsers are, and either way it needs fixing.

Nothing on google, but a Virus Scan turned up a couple interesting results... which didn't solve the problem. After more testing, I discovered it's an IE only thing so I scoured the registry and found the culprit. <a href="http://mtm2.com/~forum/images/internetoptimizer.gif" target="_blank">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avenue Media\</a>. I highlighted Avenue Media and hit delete. Got rid of everything in there in one shot. No more redirect.

More to it: http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner/li ... ndex.phtml

Beyond that: run Spybot Search and Destroy in advanced mode and check out your BHOs. Free and excellent - http://www.security.kolla.de
