New Orleans

Post by ch_2005 »

So who's fault is it that a hurricane killed so many in New Orleans? The storm wasnt all that spectacular. We knew New Orleans would get one at some point in the near future. Why wasnt it protected? Who was in charge of prectecting the city?

From Wikipedia:

"The 2004 hurricane season was the worst in decades. In spite of that, the federal government came back in the spring of 2005 with the steepest reduction in hurricane and flood-control funding for New Orleans in history. Because of the proposed cuts, the Corps office there imposed a hiring freeze. Officials said that money targeted for the SELA project was reduced to $10.4 million, down from $36.5 million. [48] The money would have gone into funding studies about the feasibility of upgrading the current levees to withstand Category 4 and 5 Hurricanes instead of just Category 3."

Oh that's right. It's a govenment operation.

Just think twice before you blindly trust the government.

Hopefully we will not have to loose any more lives to learn what the Dutch have learned long long ago. Maybe we will be able to make a system that rivals the dutch storm control system.

Oh boy.... Not another one...

I suppose the whole hurricane happened because of Bush... I'd really like to know how he made it, because I'd sure like to send a couple to china.

Why blame the Federal Govt.? Now Orleans/Louisiana didn't exacaly do much to help themselves. Louisiana's "wonderfull" guv' didn't even try to prepare for this.. She just expected the feds to come down and take care of everything. When that didn't happen she started blaming anyone but herself. The state of Louisiana should have had evacuation plans in place for a cat 4-5 hurricane. They didn't. They've known for DECADES that the levees wouldn't hold. They did nothing.

Blame the feds? No.. Blame the state officials.. better yet.. blame the citizens of Louisiana. They elected the officials.. If they wanted something done, then they should have elected better officials...

I've got a better idea... Lets blame the extremely bright people that built a settlement 20 ft below sea level. France.

Down with France! Thay caused the NATURAL DISASTER...

I'm going to go to burbon street (or whats left of it..), buy me some freedom fries and scream "take that France!!!" while I shove them up Jacques Chirac's ass.

(and before someone makes a crack about the fries.. yes I know french/freedom fries are belgian. )

there were books written in the 40's saying that there would be a major storm that would wipe out those cities below sea level. no joke. people just laughed it off. new orleans has been settling since it was built in the 1700s because there is no bedrock - it's all silt.

Gotta love democracy. The only system of government that can blame the people for their own misfortune.

I'm glad that we all agree here.

If you look carefully you will see I dont blame the FEDS I blame the GOVERNMENT. Which is federal, state, and local.

I actually agree with all of your posts whole heartedly.

"The people need to keep a close watch on their governments. People need to be more self-reliant in general, it's foolish to expect much from government. In general, in an emergency the people need to step up and take action, not act like helpless sheep. Seems many Americans have lost the American spirit."

Exactly.

Right now we just need to help the people who really had no choice. For example my GF's sister is involved in helping Liberian Refugees. Many of them come into New Orleans and had no way of escaping. New Orleans was still a much better place than where they came from. They have the American spirt. They came here to live and work. Not their fault that the gateway to America is shoddily reclaimed swamp.

I'm not usually a praying kinda guy but it couldn't hurt right now.

Just remember to keep an eye on your money when it's being spent by others, no matter what level.

My appologies. I assumed and assumption is the mother of most screw ups.

No prob. The quote was only loosely connected with my point and was therefore misleading.
