Here's the plan

Post by Phineus »

I think we're ready for the server switch. Everything has been transferred and should be ready for use, with a couple exceptions (see below), on the new one. You can get to it here

http://cownap.com/ (it's running right now)

Yes, it's a bummer but true that the current host is attempting to hijack the rhinoseros.com name. I'm hopeful of getting it back but until then we're cownap.com.

So, here's the plan. Late tomorrow night, I plan to switch mtm2.com to the new server. What that means is we may see a short, temporary hiccup in up time. Also, I plan to try and get the forum moved so we don't lose anything. That will involve turning the database server off here, and on the new one, while the transfer is made. Then, when the name kicks in, we should be able to continue without really noticing a difference at all. I'll try to find out when the dns server repropagates the names and then time the switch sortly beforehand.

FYI, the database server runs the forum and the downloads. While it's off, they won't work. But that should be only a short time. The forum is the only question mark... and I won't know if the change will be seamless until we actually do it. Should there be a problem, the downloads will still be available since I can work on them independently. Oh, and hey, I updated the forum too so we'll have to try out a couple other features (like custom avatars).

When everything looks to be in order, I plan to reboot the new server so we can kick off with a fresh clean start. A reboot only takes a few minutes so hopefully nobody will hardly notice.

------------

A couple issues

Currently, some pages on cownap still point to rhinoseros and mtm2.com. This will not be a problem when the name change is complete.

Also, the upload scripts will not work right away. I have to re-write some code to accommodate a couple unavoidable technical changes. It'll take me a day or so and we'll be back in business.

I'll post a note to let you know when we're on the new server.

What exactly do you mean by "hijack the Rhinoseros.com name"? Rhino.com still seems to be working!

Domain names are a funny business. It has to do with ownership and control. Rhino is still working because the registrar is still active, even tho the name has technically expired. I attempted to transfer it to a reputable registrar but the old one is refusing to let it go. Things can get more complicated from there. For example, I no longer own karf.net and yet I'm able to configure it even tho I cannot login to network solutions. Very strange stuff. Rhino is on this same road, tho with different people and different results. Recall, I had a similar problem with karf.net in the beginning too, but this time we're changing servers at the same time. Makes it a challenge. In a couple months we probably will be back to normal, but the transition might be a bumpy ride. The best I can do for now is let everybody know what to expect so the inconvenience is minimal.

You'll sleep better tonight knowing there are over 100 websites registered under variations of Britney Spears' name: BritneyPears.com, SpitneyBeers...
