Lamers

Post by Phineus »

Please ignore lamers when they find their way to this site. They thrive from the attention they get, so please don't give them any. And as tempting as it may be, don't lower yourself to their level. One person making a fool of themself is more than enough, thanks ;)

Sorry if my response caused problems, but I didn't "lower myself to his level", nor do I believe that I "made a fool of myself" by replying, as far as I'm concerned.... People like that joker give me a good and badly-needed laugh....

Anyway, it's all good, and your advice is sound......I'll ignore lamers here at MTMG as requested....

P.S....you missed his post in the "Harbour Town 1997" track thread in the BETA room...he hit several rooms.

> Sorry if my response caused problems

No apologies; I was speaking generally. There was no real problem with anything anybody did. I was typing up a reply to one of the posts here in the general area but by the time I hit submit, somebody had come in behind me and removed it. Still, reminders are good and I think that if we, as mods and visitors, act in concert we can handle these things quick, painless, and effectively.

> ...I'll ignore lamers here at MTMG as requested....

Just to be clear. I understand that each situation usually carries its own unique set of circumstances. That usually means there's a degreee of leeway when handling things. It's a judgement call... that's best exercised with common sense and calm reasoning. If somebody, again I'm speaking generally, if somebody feels that a few well chosen words will make a difference, then by all means give it a try - because you just never know. But what we want to be wary of is pouring fuel on the fire because once it starts blazing, there's almost no stopping it.

Anyway, the forum is here for everybody, and I think if we all work together we can weather any storm.... even if it is just a sprinkling, lol.

> you missed his post in the "Harbour Town 1997" track thread

I left it there deliberately. I need to keep 1 (one) post around so I can track the ip address if it gets that far. I usually leave the mildest one here in the general area (sometimes just blanking out the message or subject line). You'll see a couple examples of that in the back pages. This time around I was too slow, lol. That stems from my way of reading the forum (bottom to top). By the time I got to things, they were already gone. Can't be napping around here :-) So, anyway, I left that one there for the sake of keeping a record.

Some methods used to curb problems:

- soft name ban on the forum only (cussing and venting)
- soft ip ban on the forum only (flooders)
- medium ip ban for the site
- hard ip ban for the server
- scripted bans for specific pages
- ip/trace route tracking to locate the trouble maker
- TOS notification to their isp
- e-mail contact to an authority where they live
- telephone their parents

There are a lot of options available but it seldom requires extreme measures. Kids think they're anonymous on the internet. They're not. Often, just the knowledge that I can do these things is enough to put an end to it.

Any questions? Just ask. It's your site too and we all want it to continue problem free.

Depends on how they change. If it's just his isp using dynamic ips, then yes, there's no problem. If he's using a spoofer, it's a bit trickier but you can still get him. Sooner or later, his computer must give out information or it can't send and receive http headers, and when it does, that's it.

I guess I should add that I'm working on a way to get a computer's cpu serial number and the ethernet mac address. I don't know if I'll ever need it, but it's good stuff to know. Those things can't be spoofed.

As for getting this guy, that's not really the goal. A peaceful forum is what matters most. I'll leave this guy to his guidance counsellors and parents.

Yes I know, and yes it's taken care of automatically. Thanks mtm2dude for looking out for us. If a day ever comes and you see something funky going on, just be sure to let Malibu350 or me know. (I don't know what's going on with kc's but if that doesn't take a turn for the better we'll have to recruit bigdogge in here too ;-)

whoops, I was the one who deleted that post :o)... when I saw what was going on I didn't see you online so I deleted a few of the posts, intending on leaving just one for you to check into if it became necessary

btw, I ran an IP check and he was using a spoofer, he stopped (or got blocked?) so I didn't take it any further.

"I wouldn't mind mod powers, if you think I'd be useful here with them...." I still don't get why you turned a mod position at MWG down, You're perfect for the job.

I'm gonna try to get some more info from Mike "Cymoro" tomorrow. I'm bigger than he is. I don't think its gonna be a problem ;-)

Hes just a *beep* with no life that has to act like hes the king of the world. Supposively its one of his mods who doesn't like me, as if i care if some hick likes me or not.

Problem here solved by Sherlock Phineus......elementary, my dear Datsun...er...I mean Watson....I mean Nissan...I mean.....Aw, anyway..

....the bugger has been bagged, tried, found guilty, and "hanged" (the evidence was very strong....the defense didn't have a chance but to plead insanity)....his ID is being kept silent until we can notify his next of kin to reclaim the body.....

========================================

I didn't take the MWG-Mod offer because;

1. There's not enough traffic there yet to warrant another MOD..

2. Trying to not spread my responsibilities around too thickly....I have trucks to make, 3 websites of my own to upkeep, and a real world outside of the 'net to live too.

---> I accepted duties here mainly because Phin gave me web space, and I feel a need to return the favor...and MTMG has helped me more than once or twice...or thrice with truck-making!

If MWG eventually grows in size and visitors and needs help, then who knows? (If the offer is still good in the future, of course...)
