Racing on the zone

I would like to race online, but I've got an internet connection through a router. Does anyone know that's a problem? I've tried to race on the zone when we didn't have a router (I was a client pc, using sygate) but it didn't work. Should it work when you use a router?

I use a linksys router and I have no problems at all with any games or programs. I think it depends on the router tho.
