multiplayer through a LAN????

Hi. If hosting or Joining a multiplayer game does everyone have to have a LAN??? I just hooked up to cable and now I can't join the guys! I choose TCP/IP and enter the IP but it doesn't come upwith anything?????

thats not what you want you want to pic the loacal area net option not ip
