Come here for HOT DOGS
See how spam works? Now that I've got your attention I need some advice. I've been bombarded with junk mail from AT&T for the last 3 months trying to get me to spend money on a cable net connection - it looks very tempting but costs twice as much as my present internet connection. Meanwhile (sigh) I got a letter from Earthlink, who tell me they give me a DSL connection for the same price as my phone line.
So what I want to know is:
Has anyone got Earthlink, is it any good, does one need a seperate phone line?
Is AT&T cable better?

Six of one and half dozen of the other.
Cable is generally faster than dsl but costs more, slows down when there are many users on line at the same time (in your area, not just at your house), and running new cable wires if you need them can be a pain.
DSL is generally slower than cable but still infinitely faster then dial up connections. DSL speeds vary depending on the provider. No, you do not need a second phone line; the first one can still take calls while you're on line. If you currently use two phone lines (one primarily for the net), you'll be able to cancel it. This really make DSL cheaper. The claim is that DSL's speed is constant - as opposed to cable - but I find there is a difference during peak hours (more than just other server slow downs. No body will admit to this tho.
Hint: read the fine print. And check for up- and down-load speeds. Some cable companies don't allow you to upload at all (you need a dialup for that) and many dsl companies limit upload speeds to ridiculously slow rate. I just got rid of a dsl for this very reason. I could barely upload faster than a 56k modem.
My favorite advantage. I just set up a home LAN. Four comps share one dsl hook up, and now they're networked too. Overall, a nice arragement.

i always fall for that 1i have had earthlink for the past 4 or 5 years with no problems, but its a 56k dial up i have been tempted to try out their DSL but they have not yet offered it to me at the same price
perhaps that deal is just to hook some new unsuspecting subscibers while they continue to pillage their faithfull of their hard earned $$$ at $50 a month for DSLdo you have a link to this EL DSL offer ?

Hmmmm... thanks for the input guys. After reading the small print I realise this is not a DSL line (I did find it rather hard to believe at $20 per month) but just an alternative to AT&T or any other ISP.
However I still intend to get either DSL or cable at some point. Around here (Salem, OR) cable costs $40, DSL about the same. Phin, I think I'll quiz AT&T re uploads before I commit myself, thanks for the tip.

40 bucks for cable is a good price just make sure it's 2 way not the phone upstream that many use. Also see if they offer any ftp space. Many dont & while theres always xoom & places like that, ya just cant beat having your own.
You might also ask about equipement. Some give it to you, others rent & some just make you buy it. I'm fairly sure that a cable modem is fairly expensive.
I get my DSL this Wensdays. WAAA HOOOO
Also, it may be different where you live, but expect a long wait
from the time you order it till the time it's installed. Mine took around a month.
You didnt really post a smutty link, did ya?

JnJ .."You didnt really post a smutty link, did ya?"
No but Psyco seems to think so (spoilsport heehee). I thought it was relatively tasteful i.e. not *beep*.
Well I think I have made my mind up to go for the DSL, thanks for all the input folks, it was very useful and informative.

I think I'll offer psyco a bit of back up here on this one. I saw the site and tho it was harmless enough, perhaps more relevent would have been if they were all in monster trucks. Hmmm, tho I can't say I agree with editing somebody else's post (I'd rather request the poster remove the link), the way I usually handle spam is to hit the delete button. I hope nobody is the worst for psyco's decision.
