Yes, I played online with Phin using Ubuntu Linux.

And guess what, it works like a charm. The gameplay is EXACTLY like if I were playing on windows.

Of course there are some minor glitches, but hopefully the Wine team would release new updates fixing those, like the smack-video redering and the sound.

I'll post a fully how-to manual soon.

Thanks Phin & Jam for the help.

This seems like a lot of effort to just not use windows....

Try XP Mini if your desperate....

Though I gotta admit, I liked the new Mandriva 2009 way better than Ubuntu. The fit and finish is far superior. And the new KDE, though having some stupid glitches, is easy to use and feels very windows like.

Stupid glitches as in after you install, your "Menu" disappears, one you re-add the menu, it is a chore to get it back to the like-able position it was in during the LiveCD run. Also, during the install, when it asks if you want to remove unused packages, choose NO, otherwise it will, for example, delete flash drive support and the drake help files.

You're gettin it all wrong, I didn't do this only for ppl to leave windows, I'm trying to port my fav game to other platforms.

I'm not sure about mandriva, I've heard that its package manager really suck but its better detecting new (really new) hardware.

Well if your doing it thru command line it might be different, but otherwise, the two interfaces are almost identical. They both do the exact same things.

Well, yesterday I played the 4 final rounds of a rumble tournament on ubuntu/linux with no problem (since I had a "floating point error" problem on Windows with Directx games...)

No problem, I'll post everything when I get home. As far as I remeber it's all about the iptables.
Is your ADSL internet connection working? Do you have internet access in ubuntu?

First of all you need DirectPlay, but if you installed DirectX 9.0c you shouldn't have any problem.

Now open the terminal and run this code (this will open some game ports)

Code: Select all

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 47624 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 2300:2400 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 2300:2400 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 6073 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 6073 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 47624 -j ACCEPT
then try to join or host a multiplayer game.
remeber to re open those ports if you reboot

You can save that code as a batch file in .sh format if you wish.

Didn't work... I've installed DX9 and I've opened the ports, but nothing happened... :(

Please see this screenshot:
