If you would like to try a different painting and photo manipulation program, try ARCSOFT's Photostudio. I use version 2.0 special edition, available for free at http://www.arcsoft.com
I never have to deal with .pal format with it . I just convert .raw to .bmp with FLYRAWGUI and back. Also works with JPEG and .TGA as well as others. Great for touching up photo's too.
