Multiplayer Connecting Issue

Post by KF2416 »

As in MTM2 Community Patch #3, has anyone having trouble trying to connect to anyone via IP using Voobly?

Crap. Voobly probably doesn't like the new interface. Have to see if I can fix this from my end. I doubt Voobly is going to update their lobby for the community patch.

Some feedback from the Madness Crew discord channel who played online a bunch over the past couple of days:
1:01 PM]MadManMammoth: Loved how smooth the new MTM2 felt! Just a bit of shame that we didn't get a lot of complete matches in (mainly due to me/other players disconnecting from the game abruptly)
[2:10 PM]RuDeE: Do you think it was a game side issue or has the connection been bad like that back before it all got updated?
[2:11 PM]MadManMammoth: Felt like a connection issue for sure. Even Tiger, the host, managed to get disconnected while everyone else was still in-game
[2:47 PM]fox: Multiplayer pretty much doesn't work at all with advanced shadows on and the connection was naturally pretty laggy since we had to use radmin, so if gameranger supported could be reintroduced that'd be great
From another post:
Only issues I can think of right now are the game tending to crashing VERY often when launching an online race with advanced shadows on and if it does launch some people get a big head start because their pc's can load shadows faster, When the 1st place guy finishes a race the game doesn't let the others finish and just ends the game instantly as if they're playing in offline, also reintroducing gameranger compatibility would be very nice so we wouldn't have to rely on Radmin to play online.
Also, Foxy (fox above) can't log in to the forum any more. I'll have him do a hard reset on cache, but if you have any other tricks, I'll let him know.

Ok good to know. The gameranger and the end race issues are something that I can fix easy. Probably can fix the starts too by having the game wait until every connected computer sends a ready signal. The random disconnects is trickier as I will need to either get some diagnostic txt files or have it happen when playing online. It's probably latency related since trying on local network between my laptop and my PC doesn't happen much.

When you say Foxy can't log in, does Foxy get that submitted form was invalid error message? or something else? The only name similar to that that I can find in the user list is FoXx

I would have assumed people would just key in the IP but I assumed wrong :D I've played the game that way for a long time after Rennaisance Games went down. Even when voobly picked up the slack.

This is the Fox: memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4595

They are using radmin to create a "psuedo LAN" that they all connect to. Apparently, the latency is not that good using radmin. Although, I have played with my son recently on our actual LAN via wifi, and there was some definite lag. His truck chopped around on my screen as we drove, and we could make contact without the trucks actually touching on our screens. So, potential improvements available there.

Ah, so is Fox getting that submitted form is invalid? Because if not, then I can only assume he forgot his password. The forum says he last logged in almost a year ago, so cookies should not be the issue. The password reset should work but if it doesn't i probably have to look into forcing it manually somehow.

I asked him on discord, but no response. So, no rush.

Game ranger is a bigger issue it turns out. It refuses 64bit applications. Will be looking into this now.

Also found all the issues involving the disconnects... it wasn't as bad as it initially looked but yes, it's all due to advanced shadows :D :D :D

The issues that have been brought up in here should be fixed in the next version with three caveats:

1. I am not able to test game ranger by myself because it won't allow me to connect with two different accounts on the same IP. I was able to do a fake gameranger connect but it's not the real thing.
2. I won't know how bad the "ghost" trucks are for other people. Doing testing between my own systems never had issues before either but clearly others had.
3. Voobly should work now but I also am not able to test because the router doesn't allow self-connecting to the public IP. (but in theory according to the logs, it should work)

Other than that, the disconnects, the bad/desynched starts and the abrupt endings are fixed.
