Dxtory "The exception was generated" error message.

Post by Ford-chan »

I've been trying to use Dxtory to run MTM1 with the 30FPS cap set, mostly for the trucks on Drag tracks to work correctly, but all I ever get out of it is this error message which will crash the app afterwards.

Has anyone else here had this issue? It worked fine on my previous PC 6 years ago (Win10), but not on my current one right now (Win11). Googled search all sorts of things ranging from disabling Steam Overlay, Discord, and haven't found anything yet. The more deeper in depth fixes is ultimately something that's just too much work for me to go through, and would rather a simple fix solution, if there ever is one?

Unless if there's some other modern alternative that does the same thing that Dxtory does that I'm not aware of? Otherwise, Dxtory has turned into a crash happy POS for me at this point.

What video card do you have? Nvidia or AMD?

Nevermind, thought it might be video card related but I don't think so. I was actually getting the same error, I tried switching to Windows SP Service Pack 3 compatibility and so far it seems to be working. Try that and see if it helps.

The Windows XP SP 3 comp mode seemed to work for a short period, only for the app to start bombarding me with the same error message once again. :x

By the way, I'll post the log in case someone here notices anything odd...

And to answer the video card question, it's an NVIDIA Card, a GeForce RTX 4070 in fact.

Hmmm... ok I have been running into the same issue.

I assume you have the latest version, which is 2.0.142

Try downloading this one, https://exkode.com/download?d=DxtorySetup2.0.128.exe

When you install, it will detect the previous installation. Just install over it and select clean install. If you have a license for dxtory, make sure you backup the license file as you will need to re-register after installation. If you don't have a license file then ignore it. I got it to work this way, but I haven't used it for an extensive time so I am not sure yet if it's a 100% fix.

Righto. The crashing has stopped, only now is a new problem...

With both Dxtory and MTM1 running at once, Dxtory for whatever reason can't seem to pick the executable running in the background, and will not show up in the profile tab as a result.

This is just making me even more angrier than ever, especially since I had no problem whatsoever using it on my previous PC from 6 years back, so why won't it work on my current PC? This is essentially a case of applications and the PC having their own standards to where one simply doesn't agree with the other.

Have you tried running a race first? On my end, dxtory only picks it up once a race starts. That's because there is zero video input from the menu screen. Many of TRI's games up until 4x4 Evo were designed in a *stuff* way as insisted by Microsoft. The menu screens are basically the same as launching word or excell or outlook express. The game only truly starts when a race loads up.

Sadly, that doesn't work either. :(

Don't know what to tell you about mtm1.

For mtm2 I could potentially implement a manual fps cap. Something that you could change from the settings. I've been toying around with trying to fully decouple the physics and so far I have been failing. Was able to cap the whole framerate at 25fps though and it felt less jarring than the current implementation.

Actually, the nvidia drivers allow you to select a max framerate for games now. You have to go to the nvidia control panel, manage 3d settings, program settings and search for monster there.

Oh actually another question, were you running MTM1 in software mode or in direct3d mode? (with the help of dgvoodoo or something)

I run MTM1 in Software Rendering, since running it in dgVoodoo, despite reasonably quality terrain textures, the textures on the trucks are awful, to a point where I can't really be bothered using it.

I'll try the NVIDIA Software method once I'm back home, hopefully it will be better than trying to get Dxtory to recognise the game running in the background, which never seems to work for me nowadays. At one stage I thought about using Fraps, but that software is old school in today's age, and I don't think it would work in Win11, nor does it probably have the ability to limit game FPS.

*sigh* I did exactly what you said with the NVIDIA Control Panel, but I cannot seem to force the game down to 30FPS, just so that I can enjoy the Drag mode knowing that the trucks wouldn't be so painfully slow to stage, nor cross the center line on the J Drags every single time.

Leaving me to question... Is it simply because I'm playing the full rip version of the game with no installation required whatsoever? I'm referring to this particular download of the game...

No, I'm using the same one. It's probably because you are running in software mode. That bypasses the 3d acceleration that nvidia needs to clamp down on the fps. Same thing with dxtory. It works on my end when I use dgvoodoo but not when I use software renderer.
