Making Textures Without Palettes....
Making Textures Without Palettes....
I thought this would be more common and i feel that this subject needs a post for itself (not all round the MTMG)
It is possible to make textures without any palettes at all....
Theres this program called flyrawgui which can 'properly' convert RAW to BMP and BMP to RAW without the littlest but of palette editing.
Make a BMP (64x64)
convert it to a RAW
voila?
i dont know why people still use palettes whats the point?
you can get FlyRawGui at
Download FlyRawGui

Don't want to dissillusion you Hacman, but I think this particular subject has been discussed and resolved many times (there are lots of posts)... but... and this may be a sore point, one can do the exact same thing using Traxx. Simply cut/copy from your paint program, go into your Traxx program, and paste the texture (or multiple textures) in... and Tracks creates the necessary .ACT and .RAW files for you. i.e. no need for palette conversions.
Don't take this as being derogetory.. it is bound to be of use to somebody less knowledgeable...

Please see mtmg notes on color palettes . This page has been in place for a long time.
Hacman, I'm glad to see that you've found a utility that works for you, and I'm equally happy to see you sing its praises. However, I don't appreciate spreading misinformation. Please show more discretion in future.

At a technical stretch this may be true; however, you still need proper color palettes (ACT files) in order for the textures to display properly in the game. And, I will add that FlyRawGui uses act files to create accurate color bmps, and it creates the act files automatically as part of the bmp-to-raw conversion process. Thus, even with this utility, act files are still present, unavoidable, and necessary. It is possible to make textures without any palettes at all....

Yes the utility is cool but the thing is what is all this language (sorry i'm 15 and have no clue what half these words mean....)
Oh i forgot all about that traxx thing. I used it a couple of times then.... i just stopped....
It just seems that everyone is making textures with palette converting programs....
Still have ta read that winterkill texture thingy

Hac... language is the same as "Slanguage", you learn by age or application. If you see a word you aren't sure about, take the time to look it up in a dictionary - you will end up being a "better understood" person for your efforts. Being concise and unambiguous will prolly get you laid in the end too....Haha! Joking apart, I'm giving you the same advice I give my own kids, take note, it's not bullsh*t. Above all, think before you speak.
I was going to say "no lesson" intended here, but having looked at it maybe it is, I don't think it's a bad one.See you in ICQ.
Best Wishes

Yes some very useful info there
but a large part of it can be avoided by using the flyrawgui program.
I've started a c++ program a day or two ago which converts
BMP To RAW
RAW To BMP
TGA To RAW
TGA To BMP
mainly flyrawgui with extra functionality for MTM2NFS....
When will i actually finish something
lol.
Check your ICQ mc and see if anythin has happened?

The point is the game itself is palette based at it's very core, if you leave out a palette file to accompany your texture it will still be 'using' a palette, and that is metalcr2.act. So unless your 'paletteless textures' are made with the metalcr2 palette in mind then you will end up with multi-colred pixel puke textures (which have been seen before).
In addition to Phin's and MIYH's notes I suggest going here and reading the sections on...

my point is that why are there so many palette converting programs and only 2 texture converters of which one works?
thats all i was saying not actually having textures in MTM2 without palettes more like editing textures without palettes

Because palettes are what create display incompatibilities.why are there so many palette converting programs
Everything I've tried works. And...and only 2 texture converters of which one works?
You don't need a texture converter if you work in psp or photoshop. You have to use a paint program, don't you? What's to convert?
1) then say what you mean, and 2) you still have it the wrong way around. You still need palettes to edit textures. Keep in mind that ALL graphics use color palettes. It's just that in many cases they are embedded into the graphic information.that's all i was saying not actually having textures in MTM2 without palettes more like editing textures without palettes
OK i will say what i mean....
"FlyRawGui is simple and effective"
the other palette converting program is NOT simple and rarely works (MDMRE's Raw Master)
To be honest with you the utikility is useless.
Anyone else tried MDMRe's Raw Master?
Is it just me because i can never get that prog to do anything

Well Hacman, I think the best and easiest to use palette converter is this one (para).
And the best BMP/RAW converter is the aforementioned FLYRAWGUI
Oh, as an aside, but in all seriousness, I find this link very handy: http://www.dictionary.com
