Small update coming soon

Post by Fila »

So it seems I have found a way to fix the game physics/computer trucks. I have been able to lock the physics of the game to not go above 25fps while letting the fps go to whatever number it can go to. This improves the truck handling/flight time and the computer trucks. This does result in a slightly jerky move but I'm happy with this workaround until, if ever, I am able to figure out how to get the physics to work smoothly even at 1000fps. (i think at that point I have to do some intermediate frames or something).

There's a funny bug first that I want to try and fix (debris such as water/dust/smoke is floating above the truck at crazy high fps for some reason).

This also incentivizes me to see if I can fine tune their behavior to make them more competitive. This does mean I will have to have them cheat a bit but such is life.

What's funny is that now on a track like Arizona Dreaming, where I made a special line for the trucks to be able to cheat to stay competitive, they are suddenly unbeatable :D

That being said, I do sometimes wonder to myself, is it ever as simple as simply putting the whole quest of porting the game over to a modern renderer on the backburner, and focusing on other things that probably wouldn't be quite as difficult, or is it simply not all that worth it, considering that after all these years, this has been the one and only true goal of accomplishing before moving on to other things?

Of course, this is just a mere question from me, and not so much pestering like what I've promised so many times here already, but honestly, every other monster truck game out there is absolute rubbish, Beam and Rigs, despite their realism, is nowhere near as fun compared to what TRI have done with the MTM games. I will always play those over a physics sandbox game which is basically nothing but driving around a map, with little to no game modes (be it racing and freestyle) to speak of whatsoever, something that I can never understand why most people find it fun over a game with actual game modes, plus the more simple arcade style with elements of realism physics, despite being more primative and janky, you can still have quite a bit of fun with.

It's not so much that this was the main goal, rather that this is more of the main stumbling block. Yes, quite a bit can be done to improve the game and/or add features we want but anything that would add more detail to the visual scene (such as more models in tracks to have like a more alive forest setting or something like that), or higher resolution textures or more "HD" trucks would absolutely kill the game due to an inherent design flaw in the old directx programming. Porting to directx9/opengl would allow creators to make way more cooler stuff for the game. Just being able to have more models on screen and higher resolution textures, even without adding any new modern day graphical features, would be a huge boost for freedom and creativity in this game.

Also porting to directx9/opengl would also make the game more stable and reduce the chances of game behaving weird due to different CPUs and do away with some of the weird graphical issues some people have (like transparency issues, clipping issues etc).

great news! and i'm willing to help on anything i can.

It's true that any other MT game out there is crap. I remember buying monster jam steel titans 2 just for the hell of it, and with modern games it's always one of two things: either a full-blown realistic physics sim or a lame, dumbed-down arcade racer. Both have little replay value and neither has an easy-to-use truck or track editor. MTM2 sits right in the middle. It's an open box of creativity where you can freely roam around in an F150 with giant wheels alongside your friends, so maybe the appeal for some of us will never go away. I'm all for porting the game and making it even easier to mod, as difficult as that may be.

The same sort of thoughts and opinions that I've been living with since jumping back into MTM2 9 years ago, everything else out there is just so boring as sin it's not funny, be it insanely arcadey or hyper realism, the MTM games does the best of both worlds a whole hell of a lot better than what's out there today.

Bottom line... MTM or bust!
