Grasping its size - part 2

Post by Phineus »

A terrain is 256x256 squares for a total of, er, 65536 total squares. Yea, that's right. If you make a building 6x6 squares in size and place it repeated in a track and space them 6 squares apart, how many buildings could a terrain hold?

Sounds like a grade ten math problem, lol. And yea, I've been working on a track and this idea came to me... even tho I almost posted in the wrong forum (darn shuffling).

Anyway, let's see. 256/6 = 42 ½ & 42 / 2 = 21 & 21 x 21 = 441 Does that look right? If it does, then that'd still leave a hundred models to make it interesting. If that's right, I think I'll write a script to position the models (way too tedious by hand) and see what happens.

Now if only there was a way to get models to sit flat on the ground <font size=+2 face=Wingdings>K</font>

C'mon Phin... you can do it. And once you do it you'll make my job easier for Pweacha's track i'm standing by on... (sorry Pweach, this Expo is primary... and i know you ain't reading Image)

First, tech notes.

> 256/8 = 32 & 32 / 2 = 16 & 16 x 16 = 256

Lots of room for extra models, lots of room between them but strains viewing distance =(

> 256/4 = 64 & 64 / 2 = 32 & 32 x 32 = 1024

Would need ground box help, which I don't know how to automate.

Second, tech note.

What do you suppose is happening here? As you can see, there's only a dozen models in view. One theory suggests the terrain wraps vertically (re anderson's trails) and collectively exceeds the vert limit.

Third, tech note.

I used Tracked2 to plant the models. It's all good now. And since 6x6 doesn't fit evenly on the grid, the over spill creates mtm's widest road along one seam in each direction ;-)

Fourth, summary.

Terrain completely full of 441 perfectly aligned buildings with random appearance. 100k <u>not</u> podzipped.

Fifth, Fila note.

Is Fila saying he wants to finish this up? I thought Preacher made his own tracks. If you want it, I have the txx ready to go, but it comes with several limits in terms of what you can do. If you're serious, lemme know.

Well Pweachy doesn't do tracks no more and he had a project unfinished which he kindly handed over to me. It looked very nice for what i want to do but it involves lots of terrain editing (Image) and also it needs city placement and it doesn't sound bad having it on automatic.

Note: I understood almost squat from what you explained in there... it's either me beeing totally off or it's the hour. Friday night i am tired in excess because of the school. Usually fall asleep on my keyboard.

Edit: Misplaced words because of me beeing sleepy...

Here are the results. Try and find the end of the buildings. Fila, you can still have the txx if you want it.
