DMZ = De Militarized Zone

Post by Phineus »

This assumes you have DSL or Cable, and these notes show how to configure a linksys router to run "one" computer as DMZ host. Other firewalls and routers may be slightly different but the principles are the same.

First you need your local IP address. This is not the same number as your Internet IP address.

On windows xp, open a <a href="javascript:void(0)"onClick="window.open('http://mtm2.com/~forum/images/dmzhost1. ... height=325')">Command Prompt</a> and type "ipconfig" then press enter. You will see something like this (color added for emphasis):

<center><img src="http://mtm2.com/~forum/images/dmzhost2.gif" width="532" height="287"></center>

In this example, the local ip address is 192.168.1.99. It may be different for you but it will usually begin with 192 or 170 or 127, though that is by no means carved in stone. The point is that this number 'should' be your local ip address.

Next, goto your router configuration page. You can usually do this by typing http://192.168.1.1/ in your browser's location bar. Again, that may vary depending on your particular router. Anyway, goto the <a href="javascript:void(0)"onClick="window.open('http://mtm2.com/~forum/images/dmzhost3. ... height=552')">DMZ tab</a> and type in your local ip address and click apply.

That's it. Your computer is now unprotected by the router's firewall, and you should have no problem on the internet gaming zone, or in multiplayer games.

Note. The local ip address may be a different address each time you power up your computer so you might have to check to be sure the router is up to date.

Important. It is not a good idea to run as DMZ all the time. When you're finished on the zone, it's wisest to disable DMZ until next time.

Lastly, this all assumes the windows xp built in firewall has been disabled. If anybody knows how to configure the windows firewall, please feel free to add your notes below.

I would like to add that if you're running Windows ME, click Start, and then Run, and type in "winipcfg" and that will get you your IP Addy.

It's what OS I'm running, and I know it can be differnet than all other "regular/good" OS's, becuz it has very liitle DOS capabilities.

Quick question on this topic. To disable DMZ, do you simply just put the number that appeared there before and click apply? Or does the number simply not matter?

Also I don't know about anyone else but I had to dig to find the password to access the site. Found it and figured I should note it here for others.

Thanks for any help

> To disable DMZ

192.168.1.0

Use zero. If you use a different value, you could be opening up another computer, if you have one.

I don't leave mine on default. If you do, then be sure to disable remote connections so nobody can hack in and change your settings.

On my router, I reset the DMZ to the number that was there before, 192.168.1.0 in my case.

I have a Linksys 4 port router, and only recently got it working well in the Zone. Setting my computer's IP address on the DMZ Tab would allow me to host races on the Zone, but I could not join a race when someone else hosted. I would just sit there until the host gave up and closed his game and returned to the Zone, then my game would launch, with no one else there of course.

My solution to this symptom was to manually set my computer's network card to a specific IP address, then I set this IP address on the DMZ tab in the router, and now everything works great.

Which only goes to show I shouldn't take things for granted. I run with the DHCP Server turned off, always have because my linux comp doesn't like the auto ip assignment, and I've never had a problem. Definitely something to consider when hooking up to the zone.
