TrueVision Targa
TGA, VDA, VST, ICB
Targa is a standard, fairly widely used format, but its main strength is with very colourful images. Targa supports '32-bit' RGB colour. Like 24-bit colour, Targa's 32-bit colour contains red, green, and blue data (8 bits each). The remaining 8 bits are used to store other data such as transparency information. Targa also supports optional RLE compression. Nowadays, most file fomats support 16.7 million colour RGB but when Targa was brought out this was very rare and Targa became a standard for images with lots of colours.
TGA (VDA,ICB,VST) Extensions
Targa formats created by Truevision for use with 24-bit high-resolution graphics hardware called Targa boards. Used by several high-resolution graphics vendors.
