Free is just that.... free

You get what you pay for.

Don't expect great protection from free anti-virus/spyware programs.

Oh, and guys, everything acts like it's back to normal. I did a full Malwarebytes scan, and it didn't finish though. I turned on the PC the next day, and everything was back to normal. It might work on it while it's scanning.

That's enough evidence for me...

That's good news. :) You should ask your dad to get himself a laptop instead of using your comp for... You know what.

You should do scans with everything we mentioned, especially with Conficker being unleashed tomorrow. Most virus scanners have a definition for it, but it's hiding from many scanners successfully. Millions of computers are part of the botnet and don't even know it.

Be sure to give Avira a try, I can almost guarantee results from it :)

I find it neat that after you get infected by conficker, it actually PATCHES the windows vulnerability so that other viruses can use the same exploit and take control.

I honestly think conficker was released by M$ just to get rid of people that pirate XP and can't get Windows Updates.

Now my internet connection keeps going out. It's not the rain, because it's sunny...

GAH! I'm almost fed up with this PC.

should have finished your scans instead of just stopping when it seemed fine again.

Formating your HDD is a bit overkill, you can 99.999999% of the time just reinstall Windows and cure any virus infection. Just don't rerun the file that had the initial virus :).

For that 0.000001% of the time, a low level format is usually required as your boot sector has likely been infected. The standard Format C: won't even solve that one :).

All files are left intact on a reinstall, your Registry will be reset however, so most installed programs will be buggered up and require a reinstall, but none of your files will be lost.

Should have used Avira :), I've now got 10 different people claiming it has saved their systems. 10 out of 10 is a pretty good average I'd say :).

Just remember there are two kind of Virus protection programs.

1. Those you swear by.
2. Those you swear at.

Usually they are the same program, just before and after it misses something.
