MTM2.com

Does any one else have Vista and are you able to run MTM2?

I still have Windows ME... now everyone can throw stuff at me. I want yer money Charles.

Man I got a GOOD deal as far as price.
I dont have money...lol
But I dont think I can run MTM2 with it.
Thinking, just thinking, about buying an
XP disc. I'll never be able to just forget
MTM2 It was the reason I had to take a
part time job just to pay for the dang thing.
I was a week late in getting XP.
I just hope theres a way to do it.

You'd WANT to for Vista Home Basic. It's crippled and drops some of the best features of Vista - losing the best arguments for upgrading. <a href="http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_02.asp">Reviews</a> I've read say at the least you want to pick up Vista Home Premium at the least, and if you don't mind paying for it consider getting the top-of-the-heap Ultimate edition. (Although on the bright side, the Vista install DVD contains all versions of Vista, and you can apply for electronic upgrade to a 'higher' version to simply unlock the additional features).

IMO it's too early to upgrade to Vista over XP (although it will be worth doing eventually). XP is stable, secure, 100% compatible with the hardware and software out there - in short it's simply good enough for most people (this is going to be Microsoft's major problem in selling Vista for some time to come - except in your case where they stamp out XP's availability). Wait till Microsoft put out the first Service Pack for Vista to smooth out the kinks. However, if you just bought a new PC and Vista came bundled with it, then that's fair enough reason to have got it. And don't let my words detract - I admire your courage to be a pioneer and see if MTM2 etc will run on Vista for us all lol.

Don't really know what to suggest. As Slayer says, it ought to work without too much problem. <a href="http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/winvista_06.asp">Reportedly</a>, most software compatible with XP should be capable of running fine under Vista, and Vista includes technology (as XP did) to allow it to emulate older versions of Windows for compatibility. What problems have you got and what have you tried? You can try running MTM2 in a compatibility mode for an older version of Windows (although it never needed it under XP). You're not running one of those freakish 64-bit versions of Windows are you, 'cos that apparently introduces a heap of compatibility difficulties?

RMSTitanic on Vales posted a short thing on getting MTM2 to work on Vista. Might want to check that.

I got mtm2 working on a friend's new wal-mart laptop. It has Vista Home Premium and a pretty crummy (by today's standards) graphics card. I got a BSOD when I had Double or Tripple Buffering turned on. I disabled that and it worked fine.

oh - and by the way - i didn't use the original mtm2 installation program. I just copied all the files over. That might be where Mr. Titanic needed to use compatibility mode.

Ok got it installed, but, it has a small glitch. When the race starts
the screen goes black for a second. Right at the start. Not long
but is an issue at the start. Especially if you have to turn at the
start of one. Any ideas?

Charles -- you are so fast in MTM2, that if others get a headstart, you can still win races! LoL !

REP FAN may have answered this question for someone else in another topic, but it may be worth a shot Charles, if your MTM2 High Scores file he mentions is very large.............

Ja! I have something to tell you guys, I still have Windows 98, because I really don't like XP, in fact, I hate it. It looks like it's a "Windows for Dummies" (I'm not saying that the people who has this OS is dummie) and i think that 98 is more stable, faster and better. Like oldversion.com says: because newer is not always better. Also, a LOT of DOS programs doesn't works very right with XP, also my MOTORACER 2 copy doesn't works on XP, also my CARMAGEDDON TDR2000 and the first version doesn't works right on XP (my brother has xp, also he has 2mb internet , that's why i can say this about xp) and also :

Monster Truck Madness 2 = designed for Windows 98

don't brag man, see my siggy, thats on a Windows 95!!!!! turned into a web server. That computer is the exact requirements for MTM2.

200 mhz, 4 meg video, 256 meg of ram (cough).

Back in the day (b4 the CPU started to die) that was the best comptuer to play MTM2 on, raced the fastest, rumbled the hardest, and i tnever got stuck on its butt or face.


If you don't believe that is Windows 95, look closely, there is an error on screen lol. Clasic Windows 95.

Somethings up witht he mouse too, it wont hold a click anymore. If you click and hold, it might last for a moment then cut out, thenb ack on etc. Makes it impossible to click and drag stuff. Dunno what the problem is though. i tried plugging in a USB mouse, and it worked, but if you jiggled the plug ever so slightly it would cut out. So i thinkt he plug in the back is no good anymore.

Need more proof, the desk sags from that heavy 17 inch monitor pushing down on it since 1997 lol.

Also it does the same in other games. The wife likes REAL
ARCADE, a gamingstation type thing, it also does it when
exiting that. I got a new monitor and still have the problem.
It seems to be a lil worse. lol
Its either my comp settings or Vista and I think the comp
settings would make more sence. Yet the settings seem fine.
Has something to do with the screen resolution I figure.

Charles, the only thing that comes to my mind is that it could be graphics drivers. Check ATi and see if they have anything more recent (and in particular labelled for Vista) that you can download and install. Could try a specific monitor driver too (instead of Window's default "generic" monitor ya got there). If that makes no difference, I got no idea sorry.


Just means you graphics card supports dual monitors, so you could have two connected and have your desktop extended across both of them.

Actually, I do have another idea.

I have a GeForce 6800GT here, and when I first started using it I encountered an intermittent flicker while playing 3D games. By flicker I mean the screen would show blank or a corrupt image for a moment. The effect was kind of like being in a room with a flickering light bulb. It seemed almost as if the graphics card was dropping individual frames out of the sequence on the way to the monitor. It seemed to happen in almost all games, and changing the software/drivers made no difference.

Eventually, by dickeying around with settings I found that forcing off vsync in the graphics driver global settings stopped the flicker from occurring. It doesn't answer why I had the problem, and vsync shouldn't cause it (and further turning vsync off has its own problems and arguments), but it made it work. It could be a fault but I guess it's just a quirk of the combination of hardware.

Yours is a different brand and generation of hardware to me, but your issue could be something similar... if updated drivers from ATi don't help (actually from your screenie it looks a bit like you might not have them installed) you can go into Display Settings and somewhere you should find options for enabling/disabling things like antialising, anisotropic filtering and vsync (you may not find them there until you install ATi device drivers). Then if you have hours to spend troubleshooting, you can try turning off and on these options and see if your black screen problem goes away.
