Very interesting reading this thread. Great points indeed Jumper.

I prefer to race in far chase view, however the odd time will switch to cockpit. Lost Mines Revisited springs to mind just now. That is a classic example for me.... Cope spent a lot of time and patience i remember instructing me on this track once. In the end i had one button on the wheel set so i could race in far chase as i love to do and when entering the mine, switch immediately to cockpit inside the mines with the very low ceilings and upon exiting switch immediately again to far chase.

I have tried cockpit view offline a few times but it gives me a feeling of being 'enclosed' or that 'tunnel vision feeling as Jdak put it', to me its not at all like driving in a real cab. I like to see more of the surroundings, have more view and more warning of approaching vehicles, far chase seems to give me this.

When I first started racing, I used chace far view, but I always felt detached from my truck, and could not read a track the way I needed to to be competitive. So I switched to full-screen cockpit view, and found what I was looking for. And I think that has alot to do with my 5 years of real life racing. Were you are not driving your race car from the air looking down on the rear of it. You are in the seat, feeling every bump. And you use your body to sence how the race car is handling, and how to adjust your driving to make it through a race like that, and to know what adjustments you need to make.

And when I'm racing MTM2, its the same thing. With full screen cockpit, I get a total feel of what my truck is doing, and know how to react when the truck gets out of control, or how to get through diffrent track segments. And being in cockpit, gives you a sence of a more realistic speed that you are traveling. I find myself more responsive to steering a truck at speed more in cockpit view, than with chace far, it tends to give me the feel of slow motion.

Jumper and others do have very vaild points on a few of the downfalls of cockpit view, with big air jumps, and knowing were your competitors are at. But for me, thats what makes it challenging and more fun for me. It makes you more aware of your surroundings, and the racers around you for me. As in chace far, you know were your competitors are if there close, but in cockit, all you have is your map, and I can read were my competiors are at, and what line there going to take to try and pass me, by there posistion on the map as opposed to mine.

And when it comes to big air, off camber jumps with cockpit view, it makes it more challenging ='ing more fun. I have developed a system that works very well for me. When you know ur going to be hiiting a big jump, and you get crooked in the air, I take my wheel and turn it the oppiside angle of what my horizon, (backdrop) is, for instance if your horizon if tilted to the left, i turn my wheel to the right, and vice-versa. And whatever the angle of my horizon is (left or right) is the same amout I turn my wheel in the oppisite direction, and it works 99% of the time, but you always have terrian diffrences that can throw that , but after drving a track a few times, you can adjust accordingly.

And thats another thing I love cockpit view for, is seeing the terrain, and the bumps close up, and alot of the times on bumpy tracks, I put either my left side or right side tires right on the track "Seams" (were the eleveation changes you can see a small line, not texture seams, well not always hehe)to navigate the tough spots faster.

But I do still use Chace far, with the hat tipped up a tad, in drag leagues. It makes judging the turing pole alot easier, as you normally get a 5 second penalty for hitting them with your tires. And on the rare accasions I do rumble, I also Chace far. And I have been using Chace far in track making for better terrain view, and to sence what other people would feel if they were driving my track, and try to find a happy medium that would suit a non cockpit racer and a cockpit racer.

Hehe MaX you're one of the few ppl I know that use a variety of views for this game. I guess we'll just call you "Mr. Versatile", eh? In my opinion there really is no "best view" to race with. Yes, it's true that I think cockpit users are nuts, but that doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing lol. I've tried cockpit, and it was when I first started playing the game. But once I figured out how to manipulate the views, chase far was what I preferred, and I've stuck with it. Heck I admire guys who can withstand tumbling down some mountain after a crash using the cockpit view, then jump right back on the road without missing a trick. I'd be hurling all over the place myself (weak stomach lol), but all that twisting and turning inside the cab doesn't seem to bother guys like SLO_RAZ, MaX, SLO_SCATTER, and the like.

Anyway, good thread, and very interesting points in your reply, MaX!

i use chase far, i used to use blimp view in mtm1 and just lift the screen, chase far in mtm2 with a lifted screen is as close as i can get

and i got used to it from rumbling, i am a rumbler first and a racer second, so i like my chase far view, altho occasionally while im racing, ill drop the chase far view when going up high hills just so i can still see infront of me.

so i fiddle with my view for the whole race usually

Inside the cab. It's realistic and really helps when you have a stereo
speaker system with race wheel and pedals. Makes you feel like you're
actually driving the truck.

When I play the track 'Rust In Pieces', I use Race Cam. It lets me see
all the jumps and crashes like you would see them on TV.

But it's mainly in the cab. (aka. Cockpit view).

In cab view ofcourse. Same reason as scat : "i just oversteer when playing with chase view"

I started playing in cab because it just feels real. It gives me the feeling like i'm really driving the truck. It gives another dimension to the game. When i play chase view mtm is just a game, but when i play in cab it's more then a game.

Besides, i don't think in cab is slower. Look at OLD_LoL_Evil. He also plays in cab and i think he's one of the best racers out there.

I can understand the pro's you are talking about Jumper (you can look further so you have more time to react etc..) but in a lot of race sims i play (GTR, GPL, LFS) chase view is just forbidden. You can't even play with chase view when playing online because it will give you an unfair advantage. But i think with a little practise you can be just as fast in car as in chase mode. I got so used to play in car that i can't even control the truck otherwise. Dunnow why, just used to it that way.

Yeah, neither view is "better" than the other; I think it simply comes down to either what you started with and got accustomed to, or which view you chose as your preference after sampling several options. There are real fast guys that use chase far and real fast guys that use cockpit view - period. Anyone who says or thinks differently will be banned from this forum . . . right Phin? lol

So mum . . . it's more than just a game if you use cockpit view, eh? LOL personally I like it because it's a game, and nothing more lol. I don't have to fix the truck after I roll it off a mountain, I'm still on the same tank of gas I started with over 6 years ago, no insurance, never have to be tires . . . I mean, it's paradise lol.

Hehe just messin with ya bud - I know what you're getting at. ;)

Never getitng sued for whip lash, no exploidjng ur truck when u hit things. no u being thrown o tthe front window when u hit something solid at 110 and drop to 0 instantly; ur body doesnt fly off into the horizon lol. the noise of ur truck doesnt make u lose ur hearing. and there is music comeing from some unknown place and some gu named Army is somehow always with u anywhere on the track critisizing ur driving; your own personal critic, what could be better?

Yeah this is way better than real life. You need no excuse to start up ur giant truck with its unlimited tank of gas and drive it mindlesly off a mountain or crash it into other peoples trucks.
