 Post subject: taking a step down

for those who dont know me, i hang around mostly at evo2, and a little bit at evo1. i decided to try this game [MTM2] out and i think i like it [:-)] . i figured out all the patches needed to download and install pods (so much easier to do in evo.. no patches needed!) ive seen some of the evo tracks converted to mtm2 on this site. i know theres still some that havent been yet. i would like to see Truck Stop 101 be converted next.

i make tracks for evo2. i might make tracks for mtm2, though, if i get motivated enough.

Hi Tyler, I thought I recognized the name :-)

Everything's great, but I think around here you'll find people who view your decision as a step up. Anyway, Truckstop was actually done two times.

btw, i dont know if anyone knows this, but i converted Zep2 Stuart to evo2 with ZooN's permission. some of the turns are off because i had to make new textures since the evo2 editor doesnt rotate tiles like traxx.

i actually did this before i got mtm2, simply by cloning it in the evo1 editor, editing the tiles, then transferring it over to the evo2 editor and adding evo2 features (vegetation, random trees, terrain smoothening, contour map, etc.)

hehe i think this is a great game. sorry for all who i offended [;)]
and if anyone wants me to, im thinking of doing mtm2 to evo2 conversions. although for that, its best to have textures of turns going in all directions.

No problem, and I agree with everyone else in mtm2, you took a step UP. Evo doesn't have anything on us, never will. That game my look a lil cooler cuz of it's engine, you can do more stuff than we can as far as trucks go. But a few of us can work around that, and make our stuff just as cool as anything in Evo.

I'm glad you finally saw the light, and joined the real TRI game. Over here we don't complain that one guy took what of ours, and whine that "your yellow Rubicon Jeep, looks just like mine"

We're laid back, and we give each other jabs to each other's ego's, it's just a blast, you'll love it here. That's what keeps me here. Phineus, Malibu350, BigDogge, Alpine, Sleeper, Betrayal88, Cale, Rudd, etc... if it wasn't for alot of these guys, I'da left long ago, the buddies keep me here.

yea a lot of great tracks here. and i feel the temptation to convert some to evo2. i like the track features on mtm2. when i sorta half-assedly converted zep2 stuart, it actually looked pretty good at a far draw distance (i set the metal.ini to about 125 tiles hehe). just those textures that need working on.

i found it interesting that you can have animated tiles. how is this done, btw? dont plan on doing it real soon, but im curious how to make custom animated tiles. and i wish it were possible to use ground boxes in evo2.

I wouldn't mind having the higher vertix limits and the 512x512 textures of EVO added to MTM2, but that's about it. Why they didn't include animated textures for trucks in EVO, I'll never understand. It's one of my favorite features of MTM2.

One item none of the games have that I desire is the ability to place unique tires on the front and back of vehicles. I really wanted to make a few rigs with skinny fronts and big fat slicks for the rear, or build a few unlimited sled-pull tractors. No can do.

Yes, for sure. That's one that should have been done.




And something that cracks me up. Evo does not have better graphics. It has improved art work... which we've been taking advantage of here.




The two other things of note are tire ride height (ie no floating trucks or sinking tires) and the track palette.





I'm sure we could come up with a wish list, and have, more or less, in other spots. But it doesn't matter because they don't listen anyway. And let's face it, the number one strike against evo are those gawd awful physics. So much wasted potential it's not even funny.

phineus have you tried evo2? its physics are real, you just have to have a good card to experience it. yes i agree evo1 physics are horrible. but evo2's physics are some of the most accurate ive seen. i havent played other 4x4 games though (ive heard of screamer 4x4 and 1nsane. i heard 1nsane had good crawling physics).

it seems evo2 has better graphics because you can set texture detail to "high". i guess it only seems blurry on some mtm2 textures because they are used on ground boxes, which are pretty much streched out ground textures, which explains the blurriness.

bin models look pretty "clean" to me... not sure how to explain what i mean by "clean" (dont worry its good). i have heard that they dont support more than 1024 polys, which is kinda a shame since most cards nowadays would be able to support more than that without lagging. but yea, i know, this game is 7 years old, when computers were so slow that even this game would lag.

Not only have I tried all flavors of evo but I also hosted the evo beta forum, maintain the main evo forum through it's early development, spoke directly with the lead programmer when it was being made, and wrote the <strike>first</strike> second and third utilities that were made specifically for it. Yes, I know evo as well as anybody. And so do many others here on this forum.

Tyler, I'm glad you like evo and would do nothing to persuade you from it. However, your comparisons to mtm2 are not accurate. And your claims to evo's superiority are inflated and are not based on the facts.

As for your claim about evo's game engine physics. Again, I'm glad you like them. But that is a highly subjective assessment. To me, they are some of the worst I've seen. Let's face it, when I play a computer game, I'm looking at a monitor. I am not in the seat of a car or truck and no amount of pretending can change that. It's a video game for goodness sake. There is no reality about it. And we all know that reality is for those who can't handle video games.

Furthermore, this is an mtm2 site. It is not, nor will it ever be, an evo site. There's a reason for that. And the reason is this: we don't want it to be. And don't misunderstand. Many people like games like GTA, Grand turismo, DTR, insane as well as any number of other games. That's all well and good, and as it should be. But please don't come around here trying to make evo converts out of anybody because that kind of behaviour doesn't wash. Comparisons between mtm and evo are useless. They serve no purpose. Please cut back on them. I repeat, this is an mtm site. If you're going to hang around here then please make an effort to learn this game. If I, or anybody else, wants to be involved in evo, we know where to find that information. And it's not here. It will never be here. This site will not be converted into an evo site. Lastly, we don't go to evo sites, or other game sites, and try to persuade people that mtm is a superior game. Please don't do it with evo here. I hope you understand.

Just to add on....

The 1024 poly limit isn't true. I've seen trucks with tens of thousands of vertices, although laggy as heck. All you have to do is turn off Truck Reflections in the game. Most trucks are 1000-1800 vertices.

There's no reason to lock the topic TW. We don't lock topics here anyway, a few flamers or splammers posts may get deleted from time to time but never because someone has an opinion that differs.

I for one really wanted to like evo1, and really wanted to like evo2 just as much, so much so I beta tested and fired off my fair share of emails to the powers that be at TRI to help make it better, but like Phin and many many other mtmers it fell on deaf ears, arrogant ... [snip].

4x4 Evolution is not a bad horrible game by any stretch of the imagination, it's that it's not half as good as it could have been had they listened to their biggest fans.
