Playing Summit Rumbles offline, complete with scoring zones, without changing any files...
The trick has been listed on the Gold mode and beyond page since the year 2000 but little has been mentioned about it.
First of all you must know the ".sit" filename of the track or rumble you wish to load. One way to find the name would be to use a pod utility.
Note: a "sit" is a "situation" file, a plain text file you'll find in every track pod, which contains all data regarding objects, checkpoints, courses, starting positions, track name, weather mask, etc. It is the very core of a track.
Instructions:
- Start a normal race on any track.
- Once the race starts type "GOLD", then press the key combination "Ctrl-Y", then press "Z", then press "Ctrl-Y" again. You are now in "Z mode", which will persist from track to track until you exit the game completely.
Note: You will know you are in Z mode when see the framerate as well as other technical data displayed on the screen. Enabling Z mode provides some of the coolest features in the game, the plus and minus keys at the top of your keyboard will zoom your view and the blimp and race cams are from a completely different perspective. You haven't played the game until you've played in the Z mode blimp cam view.
- Now that you are in Z mode you can load a sit directly at any time by pressing the key combination "Ctrl-L", at which point the game will pause, you then type the name of the sit file, including the ".sit" extension, then hit enter. At that point the track you've selected will immediately load, or you'll get an error if you typed the wrong thing.
Example: if you press Ctrl-L and then type "summit3.sit" then "Hypercube Rumble" will load. The sit names of the stock rumbles are "summit1.sit", "summit2.sit" and "summit3.sit".
