Post subject: wav files and re-podding
PostPosted: Tue Mar 25, 2003 7:11 am
Looking for some help,
I would like to be able to edit (or remove) the .wav file(s) that are located in the add-on truck pod's. I have searched most of the MTM2 sites and found a lot of info about repainting etc., but not much as to the step by step procedure to remove the wav and how to "re pod". I am very familiar with how to edit a wav file, so that info is not needed. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?
Many Thanks!
Joe B.

These links aim at track music but the same principles apply for all sound files in all pods.

http://rhinoseros.com/~mtmg/music.html

These links talk about using winpod as it pertains to trucks. But the same principles apply to all pod files.

Be aware that the only wav files in a truck POD are 3 files of the trucks name, such as 3 versions of Army Armstrong saying "bigfoot!" No engine or driving sounds are in the truck file.

Thanks for the quick response guys! I tried for a couple of hours last night....... unsucessfully. Is there an issue with what I want to do if the truck is a add-on pod with two trucks contained within. The truck I want to work with is Raminator, the pod comes with two trucks, one with a flag and one with out. In the wav file Army speaks:"Un Freakin' Stoppable" . I deleted out the "Freakin'" ( don't need my 6 year old yelling Un Freakin' Stoppable" at the kitchen table), from the wav and saved the file. I then created the list file but it was missing some files. Would this be my fault or could there actually be missing files? I feel like I am missing something basic here, just enough to not let me do what I want to do. Any other input?
Thanks again,
Joe B.

Yeah, I hate it when guys pod up multiple trucks. I could help you with your problem though.

I use in my trucks, one basic wav file for most of my trucks. I could take that pod apart, and just make one truck for you out of each one. Or if you just want one or the other, I could just build you that one back up. Then I could replace the wav files in each.

Mine aren't offensive in any way. If you like some help, shoot me an email with the truck pod in it.

Email address is in my profile.

LOL, I was going to suggest when you unpod that you check the box that says create response file. A response file is a lst file. Then you could rebuild the pod using the exact same file names but the wav's would be your edited versions. However, rep fan's offer looks like a good one to me. Be sure to take him up on it. J

One important note:

If you modify someone elses truck, then be sure that the modified copy stays on your computer, and doesn't get distributed or uploaded, UNLESS one contacts the author and ask permission first. Be sure to change the ZIP and POD filenames to prevent confusion and mix-ups.

Modelers have no trouble with people changing their work for personal use.....just keep it to yourself please.

ALSO, if you contact the author, many will provide a CLEANED-UP version for you....

I'd recommend using the TRACKed2 method of podding...it's foolproof (if files are missing, then it will not complete a POD file), and no LST files are required.

It's all I've ever used for podding....

(P.S....I have a vehicle called "Unstoppable" that uses that very same WAV, sans the "freakin' " portion...heh heh).

Phineus,
I did indeed take rep fan up on his offer! Sure have a lot of helpful people here. Also, I looked at TrackED2 and read over some tutorials and have a good idea of how the prog works. (I am at work right now so I have not installed it yet, will do tonight) so I have a quick question, How do I insert the wav file that i want using TrackED2? Also ZOtm_BigDOGGe, thanks for the info on authoring and personal use.
Thanks once again to everyone who helped!!
Joe B.

> How do I insert the wav file that i want using TrackED2?

First, I suppose I should say that my suggestion above assumed you were doing this for personal use... so using the same file names would be no problem there. However, I was not clear on a couple points which is what prompted BigDOGGe's extra notes.

MTM2 relies heavily on unique file names. If file names are not unique they can conflict with other files using the same name but which are located in other pods. When that happens, all sorts of strange and wonky things can happen in the game. The point being, that we should always strive to prevent naming conflicts. Especially so considering one of mtm2's strengths is the ability to make and share custom addons. When conflicts are discovered among similar files, the first upload usually wins the right to remain, and the conflicting truck or track is deleted. This situation is best avoided. So, please understand that renaming all files is not a whim or rite or anything of that sort, but it is from necessity to keep the game runnng smooth and problem free.

Now, if you're using tracked2 to make the pod, you need to do two things. First is to copy the new file(s) to the sound folder. Second is to update the TRK file. Open the trk file (it's just a text file) in notepad and scroll down until you find three wav file names. Change these to the names of the files you've just created, then save the trk file. When you make the pod from tracked2, they will automatically be included in the new pod. That's all there is to it.

Hey Joe, although I don't have anything to offer up from a technical perspective (I don't make anything; I just talk a lot lol), I happen to catch your "Sure have a lot of helpful people here" line. You hit it right on the head, bud - this is a great place indeed. The type & level of support you'll find here at MTMG is second to none, and yes, people are pretty darn quick to respond. Image

At any rate I just wanted to throw that in. Don't think I've ever seen your name before, so welcome to MTMG!

Thank you for the Welcome! I am indeed new here, and let me tell you, you can learn a LOT real FAST here thanks to the top notch contributors. Best of all everyone I have dealt with is friendly! I have been e-mailing Rep Fan, he has helped me tremendously with what I have wanted to do, all without "talking down" to a beginner. I follow many newsgroups with various interests and there always seems to be some type of flaming going on. Dosen't seem to be any here, just the love of MTM. I think it's great!

>>> "talking down" to a beginner

That's the downfall to many a site and community, they basicaly shoot themselves in the foot when they flame or haze a new beginner to the point of no return... all of us here know that the future and strength of this game depends upon people like yourself willing to learn and contribute, whether that be to build something, just race or whatever your interests may be, chances are there will be some old phart around to help ya out J

have fun
