U need black background and black textures for the ground. I haven't run the track in a very long while and cannot remember all the characteristics but i think that the weather mask is also put to night or something like that.

A typical night track is made by setting the weather mask to night. Darkstar is not typical, it is much better.

Study Darkstar using Traxx. Image

> U need black background and black textures for the ground.

Yes.

The terrain textures are mostly black, providing an illusion of darkness.

The backdrop is enclosed, like a big box, hiding the sky even in daytime.

> i think that the weather mask is also put to night or something like that.

No. Darkstar uses clear, so everything is bright and visible, the backdrop makes the background appear dark.

All the textures and models of Darkstar were extracted. But black background was not in it.

Background of Darkstar is "MOONDRP.bin."
It was set to my course. But background of my course did not become black.

and I can't set "weather mask". Because I use MTM1.

Sorry, we assumed you were working with MTM2 and Darkstar v1.1.

You've done everything right, but are missing a step that Traxx cannot do for you. You will need to extract your POD and change some things by hand, then recreate the pod with winpod or podtool.

After extracting your track pod, edit the .LVL file (text) and change the line "aliensky.raw" to "stars.vox" to enable a night sky. Use Darkstar v1.0 for an example and a source for the "stars.vox" file, which is zero bytes in size but will be needed in your final pod.

From the MTM1 Tracked1 FAQ:

Q: If I wanted to make a night time race, would it be possible? If so, how could I set the light?

A: In the LEVELS Directory, for the track file that you are working on (i.e. MYTRACK.LVL) there will be a line that has something like "aliensky.raw" down in the middle of the file. If you change that entry to "stars.vox" (without the quotes) and save your file, you should be able to get a night time stars effect for your level.

I extracted STARS.VOX from DARKSTAR.
and I set it to my course. But it failed. My course became gray sky. Why?

I don't know, I thought that would be enough.

If changing aliensky.raw to stars.vox in the .LVL file wasn't enough you could also try using the numbers at the bottom of Darkstar's .LVL in your .LVL.

-46333,-46333,0
100000
-46333,-46333,0
100000
255

That should do it if anything will, some of those numbers change the track's lighting. Good luck!

It's possible that changing those numbers will do nothing if the .FOG and .LTE files remain unchanged. Perhaps I should have posted the whole FAQ answer the first time.....

There are some other values down near the bottom that set the light level and the light vector. Their range is from -65535 up to 65536. You can experiment with these to see the effect. Each time that you make a change, you should go into the FOG directory and delete the file associated to your track (MYTRACK.FOG, MYTRACK.LTE). This forces the game to rebuild the fog and light tables for your track. Be very careful doing this and make back ups before editing any of these files.

That information is related to using the MTM1 editor "TrackEd", it may be the only tool you can use to make your track like Darkstar for MTM1.

Don,
I'm glad we could help. I hope you know MTM1 circuits and rallies can be used in MTM2, which most of us own. Your track, like Darkstar 1.0, will work perfectly in MTM2 with the help of Winterkill's MTM2 fix-it pod. I hope we can see your track when it's finished, or even before then in "The Beta Room".

i've taken OP's backdrop froim darkstar n made it into diffferent night drops.....it's just a box that is L=2500 x W=2500 x H=1000 "Select all faces" in BinEdit and under "Groups" tool select "Set Group Face Type" and set to "0x18 Normal Texture (MTM)" then model should be about roughly 5/6 above center ..........:<) and u can use dark textures and still set the weather mask to day if u want :<)

http://www.badassrebels.net/files/CityNiteV2.zip

couple of years ago i added to op's idea on darkstar, this backdrop consist of a city (actually perth, australia) but rather than being enclosed in a box its enclosed in a half sphere, which doesnt cause too much lag yet lets ur sky be 3dimensional, meaning it has stars and a moon which look realistic.

i dug this up off one of my archive cds, the idea might be of some use for people wanting to use a darkstar type backdrop but have stuff like moon and stars also, since its 3d it also opens up the way for real looking clouds shadowed in the dark as well..i never got thru to this kinda stuff tho...

i actually think this backdrop looks better than the real night time effects in mtm2, for one the moon likes like a moon, not a rock lol.

adios
