like the title says can you go underground like through a hill or you have to use ground boxes?

The terrain is solid so you need to use either ground boxes or models.

see im a coal miner and i was thinking about building a track through a coal mine or even a car crush in the mines

I don't think you'll have much trouble. If you look at the samples I linked, I'm sure they'll give you plenty of ideas.
