 Post subject: WIP: mtm2's first pinball machine

I actually started this project several years ago but never got around to finishing it. So now it returns with brand-new detail.

The whole thing is designed with Future Pinball (www.futurepinball.com), where I used the "Export Blueprint" function with some usual Photoshop magic to use it as a texture. From there, I started modeling different parts based on specifications in Future Pinball (basically, one millimeter equals one foot, making things easy).

Here's a basic pic of the table as it is now. A few models still need some tune-ups.

(The ugly transparent-red thing in the lower left is a jet bumper from the older version of the table/track. It will soon be replaced with the newer, higher-detail version.)

It's hard to get a sense of size and proportion or to know how you'll layout the course, but we've had pool tables so I think it's about time for a pinball machine. It looks good and I think it's a good start.

Currently I'm working on modeling the metal inlane surfaces (supported by the vertical rods next to the flippers on the pics). That should make it fairly easy to do the plastic inlanes since they're the same shape except a bit smaller.

Also, there'll be a little treat for driving this track at night. Thanks to mtm2's famous make-a-train-to-make-a-light loophole, the whole track will be lit up at night - just like a real machine!

HOLD FLIPPER BUTTON FOR STATUS REPORT

Latest additions:

-Changed flipper face type to mtm1 flat textures (to preserve shape better)
-Added metal inlane guides
-Added inlane plastics
-Added some posts
-Added a few rubber rings

Ii know this is a way old thread, but was the track ever finished?

I am also curious about the mtm1 faces..how do they differ?

I had a more recent, much better planned version of this (called "Temple of Sphere"), but the project hasn't really progressed that much otherwise. I may return to it if there's enough demand for the idea.

Edit: Whoops, sorry, forgot to answer your second question. MTM1 face types are flat shaded - i.e. instead of blending together, each face has a hard edge. You may be able to tell from the pic, the new flippers have better defined edges than in the first pic.

I think there's enough demand. I'm looking around and there just aren't many tracks put out for racing anymore. without new tracks the racers get bored..I know I did.

I for one would love to see the end result ;)

I agree with Sky, this should be finished up some day. It's a good idea I wish I had thought of. Fun stuff to work on if you like modeling and could make a very interesting race course.

SO are you going to go forward with it?

I'm not working 24/7 on my new track, but i am slowly amassing textures for a really good setting, and working on altitude when i can.

keeps me from getting burnt out to quickly.

Once I get all the texture s down and the road roughed in, then i seem to get kind of addicted to finishing it. Problem is..trying to be a perfectionist. I always see something I can fix, add or move around to make it look better..sometimes it ends up getting worse or more/too complicated heh

It's not much, but here's what I have for ground/playfield graphics so far. I wanted to make the textures in normal mtm2 style - grass, dirt, etc, instead of solid colors and borders like pinball art - and it looks like this will work. I added "burn spots" where lights will go. You can actually see on some games, and I thought that the general illumination lamps could be replaced with torches or small bonfires on this track, to go along with its ancient "temple of sphere" theme. Here's the track texture so far, down by the slingshots and return lanes:

Welll....... heck, why not, I still have the shape templates... I'll give it the borders. (It makes it easy on the color palette too)
