Using custom music in MTM2 tracks

There is no need to include music soundtracks inside of a POD, all WAV or MOD soundtracks can be supplied as loose files and there can be good reason to do so, distributing loose files enables the end user to remove or change the music you have selected, which is a nice option to provide.

If loose WAV and KLP files are placed in a sub-folder named "SOUND", in the main MTM2 folder, they will be fully accessible by the game (.KLP files accompany all WAV soundtracks). Since .WAV files are not compressed in any way by being in a pod there is no real benefit for including them in one, aside from making things easier for an inexperienced pod mounter. If loose MOD files are placed in a sub-folder named "MUSIC", in the main MTM2 folder, they will be fully accessible by the game.

- Loose WAV soundtrack instructions - create your POD with Traxx, having selected your custom WAV file from within Traxx (this will create the necessary KLP file). Once the POD has been written extract it to a new folder using a POD utility, remove the WAV and KLP files from the "sound" folder then re-create the POD without them. Include the WAV and KLP files in your ZIP with instructions to place them in a "sound" sub-folder of MTM2, or simply make this folder structure a part of the ZIP.

- Loose MOD soundtrack instructions - create your POD with Traxx, once the POD has been written extract it to a new folder using a POD utility, edit the .LVL file (as instructed on the .MOD pages here) and re-create the POD. Include the MOD file in your ZIP with instructions to place it in a "music" sub-folder of MTM2, or simply make this folder structure a part of the ZIP.

.MOD music belongs in a sub-folder named "MUSIC".
.WAV music belongs in a sub-folder named "SOUND".
.KLP files, which must accompany WAV soundtracks, also belong in the "SOUND" sub-folder.

Some clever track makers have chosen to create a separate download for their track's custom WAV soundtracks, which is very considerate of the end user. Those with slow modems or small hard drives are spared the extra megabytes, and the music becomes purely optional for those who may not like it. Also, a ZIP size larger than three or four megabytes makes it less likely to be downloaded by the casual track collector.

Even if you don't make your .WAV or .MOD soundtracks a separate download it can be nice to build your pod without them, then include them as loose files in your ZIP with instructions to put them in the proper sub-folder of MTM2.

For a good example of the separate download concept see the optional soundtracks available for "Fila's Adventure" and "Ostego's Run" (available at TeamSLO.com, MTM2.com and Vales.com), which are in the form of POD files. Tip: If you have these add-on music files you can unmount them from the "pod.ini" and then unpod them with WinPOD or PODView, the WAV file and accompanying KLP will then be in the "SOUND" sub-folder of MTM2 where they will be detected by the game, doing this will free a position in your "pod.ini".

- See Track Components at MTMG for information on assigning WAV music to tracks with Traxx.

- Be sure to see the .MOD pages for information on using .MOD music in MTM2. While they require some extra steps to use, MODs have many advantages over WAVs.

- If a number of loose add-on music files have collected and you are happy with them you could merge them all into a single pod, which will use only one pod entry in the "pod.ini" while reducing clutter as well as the chance of accidentally deleting any.
